Walk the steep climb or take a funicular to reach Ljubljana Castle on the top of the hill, offering panoramic views of the Old Town. Visible from every corner of the city, the castle was built in the middle of the 15th century and served as a military hospital and arsenal in the 17th and 18th centuries. Walk over the remains of the fortifications turned into a promenade and join a guided tour, where costumed characters representing different historical periods will take you back to the time of wars, Ottoman invasions, and Habsburg rulers. The castle houses restaurants serving traditional Slovene food, and hosts art exhibitions, concerts, theatre shows and an open-air cinema. Shop for traditional handcraft at the gallery by the entrance. Make Ljubljana Castle a part of your Ljubljana vacation plans using our Ljubljana travel itinerary planner.

Where to stay in Ljubljana

One of Europe's smaller capitals, Ljubljana offers fairly limited sleeping options, with most of its three- and four-star hotel rooms concentrated in and around the expensive city center. Travelers on a limited budget can explore the city's hostels, which offer small rooms with access to shared restrooms and common dining areas. If you need more privacy and space, rent an apartment on the outskirts of town, or check into one of the family-run guesthouses near the city's international airport.

  • Bit of a steep climb but it was very worth it and it's free to wander around outside and get some great pictures and then mooch back down into the wonderful city.  more »
  • The castle really is a must see, particularly if you have kids. We happily spent pretty much a whole morning looking around the castle itself as well as the puppet museum and the dungeons. There is a ...  more »

  • The time machine tour of the castle is lots of fun and gives a good overview of the castle's history and how it has been used over the years. Ticket is ten euros and gets you entry into every exhibition. Would highly recommend the tour or at least using the audio guide so you can understand what you're seeing. The architectural revamps that have been made are really interesting as are the many exhibitions/museums you can view throughout the complex. We had great fun in the puppet museum where you can actually test out some of the puppets. Beautiful views as well of course! All up we spent about 3 hours at the castle.
  • A day trip to Ljubljana turned out to be too short! The view from the castle was amazing and the surrounding old town around the canal was so vibrant with people, cafes and restaurants, shops all pulsing with a friendly, metropolitan vibe. There definitely was much more to explore and I would definitely plan for a longer visit and adventure next time.
  • Walked up to the castle located high over the city of Ljubljana it offers great views over the city. The entry fee is 7.5 euros but this gives you full access to the castle and the museum. There are interactive screens that give a brief history of the Castle and Slovenia. A very enjoyable visit
  • Ticket price for the funicular 10 euros but also you can go on foot. Use of toilet is extra charged. Worth the visit only for the view. However the best observation tower was closed without any explanation and the viewing terrace also closed to the public because of weddings taking place, without being informed in advance...After waiting for more than an hour we were allowed to enter the viewing terrace, however the cleaning staff threw us out by shouting and almost pushing!!! Prefer to spend your time in the town instead, which is really scenic and very vivid.
  • Best visit in Ljubljana. Got the guided tour called behind the bars. It had actors and costumes and was very interesting. The climb on top of the tower rewards you with a great panoramic view on the city!
