Ljubljana Castle, Ljubljana
(3.8/5 based on 3,200+ reviews on the web)
Walk the steep climb or take a funicular to reach Ljubljana Castle on the top of the hill, offering panoramic views of the Old Town. Visible from every corner of the city, the castle was built in the middle of the 15th century and served as a military hospital and arsenal in the 17th and 18th centuries. Walk over the remains of the fortifications turned into a promenade and join a guided tour, where costumed characters representing different historical periods will take you back to the time of wars, Ottoman invasions, and Habsburg rulers. The castle houses restaurants serving traditional Slovene food, and hosts art exhibitions, concerts, theatre shows and an open-air cinema. Shop for traditional handcraft at the gallery by the entrance. Make Ljubljana Castle a part of your Ljubljana vacation plans using our Ljubljana travel itinerary planner.

  • This is definitely a must go place in Ljubljana. Having in mind that Ljubljana is a small city that you can visit in a 1 day and all by foot, you can easily dedicate a part of the day to visit its cas...  more »
  • During Christmas the castle is illuminated with a carousel of colored lights that alternate atempo highlighting the tower and its ramparts as if it is suspended in thin air as the Hill remains dark. This effect is accentuated by the illuminations that decorate the perimeters of buildings below the city making it feel great. I attach some pictures of this visit. • The castle can be reached quickly by cable car traveling near the Dragon bridge and a 15-minute walk uphill around us. Worth primarily for the city ... at night the castle is lit green.

  • The castle itself isn't as impressive as many in Europe. What really makes the visit to the castle special is the"Time Machine" tour. We added it on to the normal tour costs on a whim due to the low price and the times matching up and greatly enjoyed it. The guides spoke fluent English. Lots of information, lots of humor, really a great time.
  • The most beautiful place in Ljubljana, great view, a lot of historical and cultural stuff, great museum about Slovenian history. Well preserved, you can do many things, also inside the castle are cafes and restaurants so you can stay for an entire day enjoying the place.
  • My boyfriend had to drag me to the castle because I am neither interested in history or places that tourists frequent but I am so glad he did because the castle turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip! The view of Ljubljana from the tower was amazing of course but I was also impressed with their exhibit about beekeeping culture in Slovenia and their puppet museum was engaging and playful! The Ljubljana castle is not a gaudy tourist attraction, it is elegant and laid back just like the rest of the city.
  • Definitely go up to the castle if you spend any time in Ljubljana at all. You can pay for the train but it is not a difficult walk at all to get to the top. Came by just before sunset and you'll get the 360 views of Ljubljana. Pretty great to see. There's also a fortress wall that you can go into. Definitely worthwhile to visit!
  • The architectural renovation intervention is interesting and really not invasive with modern elements that fits the old structure without disturbing it. The original architecture is obviously interesting also. A crowded bar inside
