Dragon Bridge (Zmajski Most), Ljubljana

4.0
Walk across the Art Nouveau Dragon Bridge (Zmajski Most) and admire the four large dragons protecting its corners, symbols from the city's coat-of-arms. Built at the very beginning of the 20th century, it was the city's first reinforced concrete bridge and Slovenia's first bridge paved with asphalt. Floral motifs decorate its arch and railings, while smaller griffins embellish the plinths of its eight bronze candelabras. Notice the dashes of red paint at the dragons' mouths and claws, recent additions by an anonymous enthusiast. • one at each vertex of the bridge. Not impressive, but much photographed, therefore harmless. I will look into their history for a future visit, since they told me I was not convinced and does not deserve to be reported.

  • If you go by car to the city centre from the airport Ljubljana, just pass the bridge. The bridge is located on each corner of your horses for the statue.

  • Ljubljana's iconic "bridge with the dragon statue", which could inspire a book series, marks one end of the pedestrian area on both sides of the river and it is actually full of traffic that you rarely see on pictures. Though it is still a nice spot to start or end your tour in Ljubljana's centre.
  • This bridge is special and unique since it allows people and cars and perhaps bicycles to cross from the left bank to the right bank of the river and vice versa without stepping into the water. Very convenient if you are not Biblical type of person like Moses or JC.
  • I spent a good 10 min shouting "Dracarys!" at the dragons here and no fire. No fire what so ever. Like for real? Soooo not cool!
  • It is the most famous bridge in Ljubljana, but also one where traffic is allowed, so you could not really stand in the middle of the road to take pictures. The dragons themselves seemed to have been painted red at some spots (probably by students or so?) which made them look less nice.
  • An old classical bridge, crowded with visits. There is a public WC under the bridge. It is convenient for the tourists.

Where to stay in Ljubljana

One of Europe's smaller capitals, Ljubljana offers fairly limited sleeping options, with most of its three- and four-star hotel rooms concentrated in and around the expensive city center. Travelers on a limited budget can explore the city's hostels, which offer small rooms with access to shared restrooms and common dining areas. If you need more privacy and space, rent an apartment on the outskirts of town, or check into one of the family-run guesthouses near the city's international airport.
