Cathedral of St. Nicholas, Ljubljana

(4.6/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
Visit one of the city's landmarks and a prime example of mature Baroque in Slovenia at Cathedral of St. Nicholas. Modeled after Rome's most famous Jesuit church Il Gesu, the building replaced an earlier Gothic church, dominating the skyline with its twin towers and green dome. The most prominent features of the exterior are the elaborately decorated wooden and bronze doors and Roman tombstones built in the exterior walls. Notice the keystone with Christ near the entrance, which was preserved from the older church. The Gothic pieta and statues of significant bishops and saints stand in the niches of the facade. The interior features a painted dome and the altar of Corpus Christi surrounded by angels. • Imposing late Baroque monument. Unfortunately the transept area is open only to pray. Pity that in the space dedicated to the culmination of an ascetic path that starts from the entrance, where are cencetrate works of great value, you can access it, interrupting abruptly the visitor's experience. Both tourist, both scholar ...

  • The Cathedral is not very nice view of the street but has two fairly recent beautiful bronze portals. The baroque interior is responsible but sumptuous. A must visit place.
