Cathedral of St. Nicholas, Ljubljana
Categories: Sacred & Religious Sites, Tourist Spots
Visit one of the city's landmarks and a prime example of mature Baroque in Slovenia at Cathedral of St. Nicholas. Modeled after Rome's most famous Jesuit church Il Gesu, the building replaced an earlier Gothic church, dominating the skyline with its twin towers and green dome. The most prominent features of the exterior are the elaborately decorated wooden and bronze doors and Roman tombstones built in the exterior walls. Notice the keystone with Christ near the entrance, which was preserved from the older church. The Gothic pieta and statues of significant bishops and saints stand in the niches of the facade. The interior features a painted dome and the altar of Corpus Christi surrounded by angels. This Cathedral looks nothing special from the outside but do make sure that you open that unassuming door and go inside!
Wonderful interior and art. Note the frescoes especially the dome fresco.Note also the door relief depicting the history of Slovenia.
Ce bâtiment se situe dans le centre de la vieille ville, vous n'aurez aucun problème pour le trouver. A titre personnel, j'ai beaucoup apprécié la porte !This building is located in the center of the old town, you will have no problem to find. Personally, I enjoyed the door!show original
