Cathedral of St. Nicholas, Ljubljana

4.6
#2 of 10 in Historic Sites in Ljubljana
Religious Site Tourist Spot
Visit one of the city's landmarks and a prime example of mature Baroque in Slovenia at Cathedral of St. Nicholas. Modeled after Rome's most famous Jesuit church Il Gesu, the building replaced an earlier Gothic church, dominating the skyline with its twin towers and green dome. The most prominent features of the exterior are the elaborately decorated wooden and bronze doors and Roman tombstones built in the exterior walls. Notice the keystone with Christ near the entrance, which was preserved from the older church. The Gothic pieta and statues of significant bishops and saints stand in the niches of the facade. The interior features a painted dome and the altar of Corpus Christi surrounded by angels. Where to stay in Ljubljana

One of Europe's smaller capitals, Ljubljana offers fairly limited sleeping options, with most of its three- and four-star hotel rooms concentrated in and around the expensive city center. Travelers on a limited budget can explore the city's hostels, which offer small rooms with access to shared restrooms and common dining areas. If you need more privacy and space, rent an apartment on the outskirts of town, or check into one of the family-run guesthouses near the city's international airport.

  • The cathedral, particularly the door, has several beautiful decorations and the staff working there was nice too. It is also free to visit. Would recommend it while you're in town.  more »
  • Start with the doors and note the detail therein. The frescoes are quite special and it is worth learning a little more about the history The artwork inside is excellent. It can get busy.  more »
