Vrsic, Kranjska Gora

Renamed "Russian Road" in 2006, Vrsic is a high mountain pass that runs through the heart of the Julian Alps. The road was built 1,611 m (5,285 ft) above sea level during World War I by Russian prisoners of war. Hike the cobbled road or cycle to the summit while admiring the exceptional vistas of other peaks and slopes. Watch for Ajdovska Deklica, a naturally carved face of a maiden in a rock. Have a cup of coffee or consider staying overnight at one of the five mountain huts along the way and at the top of the pass. The trails are easy to follow, even for children. • The ascent to the Vrsic pass is complicated by the traffic, cars, motorbikes and bicycles, and if all off: works. It is a mythical place for its history but there are mountain passes much more beautiful.

  • You need a strong stomach and good drivingskills to navigate the 49 hairpins up and down. Nice views and lots of opportunities to stop for a pic and some drinks. Too bad about the roadworks but ofcour...  more »
  • We started from Kranjska Gora. The road with hairpin bends offers beautiful views. On the road there is the Russian church is made of wood. You can also see Triglav-the highest mountain in Slovenia and the rock created by nature a woman's face.

  • Beautiful road. Amazing alpine views. Many sites and interest spots on the way. There are 50 turns on the way up and down. Crowded with cars and bicycles on summer time.
  • It is absolutely cozy and beautiful hut conveniently located on Vršička cesta which is ideal starting point for many hiking and tourist trips in the Triglav national part (Julian Alps). The hut is privately run, however, the prices are absolutely comparable with the other “hiking association” run huts. The hut offers clean accommodation and freshly made food. The staff is very kind and friendly. Warm recommendation.
  • Very nice road from kranjska Gora to Bovec . a beautiful mountain pass road . it is short you can do it easily and slowly to enjoy every moment. dont forget to stop along the road in some veiw point
  • If you pass Vrsic be sure to stop at Tonka's house, preferably hungry. Try everything and leave some room for excelent sweet strudelj (again-try each version house has to offer). Excelent offer of house schnaps. Coffee is cooked old way. Ms. Tonka is an extraordinary woman! A+++++ for the whole experience. Thank you! We'll be back.
  • We hit that place upon a bicycle tour in summer 2005. A rather long climb from Kranska Gora. A long downhill to the Sotscha valley. Scenic views.
