Create an itinerary including Kostel Castle
Step back into the Medieval Ages at Slovenia's second-largest castle complex, Kostel Castle. The castle's origins date back to the 13th century, when the Counts of Ortenburg built the original fortification, and it expanded over time. Occupied by local princes and then the Habsburgs, the castle became an important point of defense against Ottoman incursions, before it finally fell to the Ottomans in 1578. Today, the castle and its market settlement below remain intact. Learn the history in the castle's exhibition, and take in the views from high above the Kolpa River. Check the website for open times as the schedule changes seasonally. By using our Kostel trip itinerary maker, you can arrange your visit to Kostel Castle and other attractions in Kostel.

  • Great little castle on top of a small hill. There is a parking place, well marked and maintained 5-10 min walk from the castle depending on your pace. It even has a porta potty, that was clean and had lots of toilet paper when we were there. The walk to the castle is not challenging and quite nice, but the last part is moderately steep. The staff was friendly and they provided instructions on how to see the castle and the route we should take, since there is no guided tour. But everything is well marked and the sings are in English and slovenian, only the video presentation was in Slovenian, but there might be an English version. They offer coffee (instant from the machine) and have a terrace infront of the castle, with a stunning view. There is even a castle escape room, but we did not have the time. Overall a nice experience.
  • Beautiful castle with a great view, unfortunately it was closed
  • Nice castle, still some restoration works in progress. Rich history and also avaliable game of "escape room". Helpfull staff and educated a lot. Nice view of river Kolpa. Next to the castle are appartments available. Parking lot is free but a little bit further away from the castle (5 min walk)
  • Beautiful place. The beer is very good
  • The Kostel Castle with its accompanying market is the second largest castle complex in Slovenia. Due to its exposed position above the River Kolpa and the difficult accessibility, it was an important obstacle or defensive point in the system of defence against the Turks at the time of the Turkish invasions, and at the same time it was included in the system of bonfires, which served to quickly inform about the approaching Turkish threat. In 1809, the people of Kostel attacked the French soldiers residing in the Castle, thus initiating the armed phase of the anti-French rebellion, the largest uprising against the French occupying authorities in Slovenia. After the vengeful burning of the Castle, the lower mansion was built on the edge of the square, which was destroyed during World War II. Nevertheless, the market settlement has preserved its character and is today the only inhabited settlement in the country of that kind. With the renovation and reconstruction works, the Castle was refurbished from the 1990s to a part of its former image, and the Castle gave the name and coat of arms to today's Municipality of Kostel. In it you can view the exhibition, enjoy the wonderful views across the valley of the River Kolpa and accompanied by a guide you can experience a pulse of the medieval days. The Castle is a wonderful stage for various cultural, music or business and culinary events.
