Kobarid Museum (Kobariski muzej), Kobarid

4.7
#1 of 120 in Museums in Slovenia
At Kobarid Museum (Kobariski muzej) learn about one of the bloodiest battles of World War I, which Ernest Hemingway vividly described in his novel "A Farewell to Arms." Unlike most of the battles, which were fought in the trenches, this one took place on hilly terrain. A very modern two-building complex houses graphic exhibits documenting the course of the fighting and the lives of soldiers. See photographs, uniforms, weapons, personal items, maps, and large landscape models. Most of the text is in English and you can also watch a 10-minute film in several languages to get the big picture. • After enjoying all the outdoor action around Bovec, it's a good counter balance. Small but with a good collection of pictures and explanation in English next or Italian, German and Slovenian.  more »
  • The museum has a lot of material on the First World War battles that took place in the neighbouring mountains. Gives a good glimpse on how hard it was for the soldiers to be here (height, avalanches, ...  more »
  • By history buff, I visited a considerable amount of thematic museums. This Museum of Kobarid has its strength in the ability to explain: firstly, the war and its dramatic consequences on the life (and death) of the soldiers. For military history buffs, or just for Italians who always wonder what happened, here is the answer: the display fixtures, a great movie done well in many languages and, above all, a huge plastic "animated" of the battle, can understand. The Museum alone worth a trip to Slovenia.

  • Well organized museum. You can jump back into the era of WW1. Interesting journey, you can spend at least 2-3 hours in the museum. Highly recommended to participate one of the organised historical hike trip (the shortest one is 4hrs, the longest is a whole day)
  • Amazing place. Highly recommended, in my opinion the best museum in Slovenia
  • Excellent museum with rich and detailed exhibition on Isonzo battles from WW1.
  • Mid-sized, but with really good collection. Good place to start explore historic places in that area
  • Great WW1 collection. Recommended for all generations.
