Lake Cerknica is an intermittent lake in the southern part of the Cerknica Polje, a karst polje in Inner Carniola, a region in southwestern Slovenia. The lake, oriented in the Dinaric direction from northwest to southeast, is present for the most part of the year. When full, it is the largest lake in the country. The plain is surrounded by the Javornik Hills (1268m) to the south and Slivnica (1022m) to the north, both belonging to Dinaric Alps. The area of the lake mainly reaches, but can reach up to 38km2 and the surface level varies from 546m to 551m above sea level. The lake is an important wildlife resort, especially as a nesting place for many bird species. Botanically, it is distinguished by amphibious plants. It is therefore a part of two Natura 2000 areas of protection and the focus of the Inner Carniola Regional Park, which covers additional Natura 2000 areas in the broader region. The climate in the area is continental, with a mean temperature of and the annual precipitation about. The largest settlement at the border of the lake is Cerknica, located north of the lake. Various watersports, including windsurfing, are popular on the lake.

  • Will it be meadow or a lake? It depends on a season. Rainy season is time of water and you can row there. In winter, cold winter, you can use your ice skates. During summer and dry season you can walk...  read more »
  • Recommended by Sara, the girl who runs the Miskar bed and breakfast with the family, we went to see the Lake that appears and disappears depending on rainfall and therefore the time of year. It's a weird effect. At this time (August) is more dry, so the reservoir with water can be reached by passing through the "dry" like a lunar landscape. It is too early to visit and is very close to the Miskar, so let us jump. It seems to be really into another world. If you want to from the hotel you can take bicycles and get there in 5 minutes. Or like us you slugs and go by car to the Lake you can of course:-D DDD nahce stop sunbathing and rest, if you like the Lake environment.

  • It is a small Karst Lake in summer basically walking on what is the bottom of the Lake in winter, around the area is populated to a minimum and it has a nice feel of untouched nature. It's easy to run into Falcons that hunt small prey. Recommended destination.

  • It's simple magic place, you must visit it at least 3 times per year to see all the colours that lake can provide for us to see ;) Fascinating!
  • Also known as disappearing lake, Cerknica lake fills up after rain seasons and disappears during dry season, so every time you visit it you will come to lake with different size. A great place for people who enjoy nature, especially bird watchers - over 250 species of birds recorded. When it is dry, you can see some interesting sink holes where water disappears to the ground. Possible to rent boats and bikes during weekends. Unfortunately, no public transport available to get you to the lake.
  • When it's flooded and is special events because it leads to the road through the middle of the Lake.
