Vintgar Gorge (Soteska Vintgar), Bled

#1 of 13 in Trails in Slovenia
Cut deep between two hills overgrown with beech forests, Vintgar Gorge (Soteska Vintgar) is full of small waterfalls, rapids, and erosion potholes. Cartographer and photographer Benedikt Lergetporer and mayor of Gorje Jakob Zumer discovered the gorge in 1891. Walk along the tourist path with narrow passages, wooden bridges, and galleries, constructed on the rocks in 1893. Listen to the roar of Radovna River echoing along the 1.6 km (1 mi) long gorge marked at the end by a waterfall plunging 16 m (52 ft). The gorge also features two manmade attractions: an arched stone railway bridge from 1906 and a dam. When you reach the end of the gorge, walk back across the meadows passing St. Catherine's church. • The walk from Bled to the gorge is already stunning, but so is the gorge and the waterfall at the end. Pay attention that the gorge is closed during the wintertime, the easiest way in that time is dir...  more »
  • We were staying in Bled so took local transport to the Gorge with an agreed pick up time. The walk through the gorge is fairly easy going with wooden walkways at the edge of the river. Very picturesqu...  more »
  • You should get up early and come right when it opens. We arrived at a quarter to eight, were first on track with no line and stuck with people. Us a small group March interrupted each other. On the way back already to be more fully on the bridges, and we saw that coming a lot. Was still nice and easy, but there is no doubt that it is important to arrive early. The place is just amazing! If you're in the area, you must visit. Awesome and easy route, even for children, even if it rains.

  • Absolutely amazing place! The 100 meters that we did where breath taking. Unfortunately we could not do the whole walk because it was under construction, it was still worth coming and having breakfast next to the water. We will definitely come back again. Coming in April we have good weather and very few other tourists
  • Just to be clear - I'm not giving this place a bad review. Vintgar Gorge is one of the most pristine and beautiful places in Slovenia. I'm giving the worst possible score for the organization, management and presentation of this incredible place! We have made a visit on 30.04.2018. The parking lot was absolutely FULL. And full of foreign tourists not locals like us. What we found was a closed site. The path was CLOSED. No notices anywhere, no explanations, nothing. Just a sign "Closed" and a little further down the path a locked railing. Also, at the start of the path to the gorge there was a substantial land-slide, a sizable portion of the path was missing and the place was not either protected, labeled let alone repaired. I can understand that this path needs maintenance, I can understand that such a landmark needs proper funding and staff constantly maintaining this place, but there was NO ONE THERE! No message, no warnings, no explanation, NOTHING. Except a throng of tourist, willing to spend money ... So please, get your act together, employ a tourist manager from Italy or Austria, because obviously local tourist board has absolutely NO CLUE what they are doing and try to cater to the people who come to you willing to spend money! You have a spectacular natural monument. Don't waste it, don't treat it like chore instead use it and celebrate it, let the people enjoy it. This was such a letdown. Such a disappointment. Such a wasted opportunity. Come on ... please, you can do so much better!!
  • While the scenery was amazing most of the ramps were closed. We could only go till the first bridge. And since there were no signs pointing this out it was crowded with ppl turning back. All in all I think it would of been amazing to see it all, will definitely come back one day to see it all.
  • Very beautiful place. But notice that the walk along the gorge is CLOSED (April, 2018) for renovations. There is a track among the woods that allows to go from Vintgar gorge to the falls at the end of it. But it's along the hills, so not as easy as the walk.
  • A very beautiful river walk. Beautiful colours ,easy to walk, stop and look, touch the water, move some small rocks, take colorful pictures. A place to see nature at it's best. Take into account that the parking might be packed in the noon time. Also a line in the entrance .
