Vintgar Gorge (Soteska Vintgar), Bled

#1 of 157 in Outdoors in Slovenia
Cut deep between two hills overgrown with beech forests, Vintgar Gorge (Soteska Vintgar) is full of small waterfalls, rapids, and erosion potholes. Cartographer and photographer Benedikt Lergetporer and mayor of Gorje Jakob Zumer discovered the gorge in 1891. Walk along the tourist path with narrow passages, wooden bridges, and galleries, constructed on the rocks in 1893. Listen to the roar of Radovna River echoing along the 1.6 km (1 mi) long gorge marked at the end by a waterfall plunging 16 m (52 ft). The gorge also features two manmade attractions: an arched stone railway bridge from 1906 and a dam. When you reach the end of the gorge, walk back across the meadows passing St. Catherine's church. • The Gorge is located near the town of Bled, is surrounded by high rock walls. There is a lot of greenery, crystal clear water, the fish swim. The route is not severe, I recommend comfortable shoes. In the morning it is still chilly-near 20 degrees, you might want to go early because the wheel 11 hours is already a crowd and a long queue to checkout.

  • We arrived around 11:00 AM and ended up queuing for around 30 mins to get a ticket for entry. The Gorge was very nice although just too busy to enjoy, it was almost like Domino's all the way through. ...  more »

  • Taken with my pixel phone and this look postcard perfect. Not a photographer but this places beauty meant pictures where stunning but the picture still does not begin to show the real beauty of this place. Accompanying the beauty is the wonderful sounds of nature and the sound of the water. Must see. Walked here from hotel Astoria and was a perfect day trip. The walk was a loop round and very scenic.
  • Beautiful little hike down Vintgar Gorge. It’s a quick 3-4km north of Lake Bled and well worth the trip. The water is crystal clear and turquoise, set against the forested mountainsides. The walk is easy, a wooden pathway with railings where needed. At the end there’s a beautiful bonus waterfall! You’ll get some fabulous photos if it’s sunny, and great ones if it’s not. There was plenty of free parking when we were there in September. And a small entrance fee of €5 to help with preservation. If you enjoy nature in her glory, I’d bet there’s no bad time of year to see this!
  • Really great place! Near Bled, this is a must see! There is parking (free), and best time to come is early in the morning to avoid crowd at the entrance. Price for entrance to view this marvelous natures creation, low for my opinion. You will have to carry some water with you, because it's a long way to the other side, and even if you are going back the same way, there could be some crowd jams in some areas.
  • Nature at its best! A part of the forge walkway was closed, leading to the waterfall when I visited but that did not prevent us from having a wonderful time hiking as close to the top of the mountain as we could get. Check the weather and local conditions before you go but I would recommend walking shoes or trail running shoes (if you run up) and alight jacket.
  • Surprisingly long gorge with a winding stream on the bottom and breathtaking view around. There is a narrow walkway along the gorge with hand rails for security and the path is easy enough for almost anyone. I would recommend visiting this place after (or even during) a rainy spell, since this increases the water flow and lets the visitor feel the forces of nature a lot more intensely.
