Vintgar Gorge (Soteska Vintgar), Bled

#1 of 15 in Trails in Slovenia
Cut deep between two hills overgrown with beech forests, Vintgar Gorge (Soteska Vintgar) is full of small waterfalls, rapids, and erosion potholes. Cartographer and photographer Benedikt Lergetporer and mayor of Gorje Jakob Zumer discovered the gorge in 1891. Walk along the tourist path with narrow passages, wooden bridges, and galleries, constructed on the rocks in 1893. Listen to the roar of Radovna River echoing along the 1.6 km (1 mi) long gorge marked at the end by a waterfall plunging 16 m (52 ft). The gorge also features two manmade attractions: an arched stone railway bridge from 1906 and a dam. When you reach the end of the gorge, walk back across the meadows passing St. Catherine's church. • The walk from Bled to the gorge is already stunning, but so is the gorge and the waterfall at the end. Pay attention that the gorge is closed during the wintertime, the easiest way in that time is dir...  more »
  • We were staying in Bled so took local transport to the Gorge with an agreed pick up time. The walk through the gorge is fairly easy going with wooden walkways at the edge of the river. Very picturesqu...  more »
  • You should get up early and come right when it opens. We arrived at a quarter to eight, were first on track with no line and stuck with people. Us a small group March interrupted each other. On the way back already to be more fully on the bridges, and we saw that coming a lot. Was still nice and easy, but there is no doubt that it is important to arrive early. The place is just amazing! If you're in the area, you must visit. Awesome and easy route, even for children, even if it rains.

  • Having read the reviews we thought it seemed like a good way to while away an hour or so. We took our time and meandered along the length of the gorge, stopping to take pictures and allowing our daughter to build little rock towers alongside the many which have been built by other visitors. She had a wonderful time doing this. We arrived at 12 o'clock and were sitting down with a refreshing drink, having returned by 4pm - it had turned into a day out and realised we'd skipped lunch for this feast of natural beauty. My advice is to go, enjoy, take your time, soak in the beauty and magnitude of the surroundings... Amazing!!!
  • It was nice. No doubt about that. But I don't feel the entrance price of €5 is appropriate. Way over priced. It is only a half hour walk and there is one main section if it's true beauty otherwise you are just walking beside a stream. I understand the money goes toward the maintenance of the footpath however I feel it has paid itself over multiple times by now due to the thousands of visitors each day. Tip: Get there first thing in the morning. By 9:30 there was 4 bus loads and atleast a hundred cars. Unlike everywhere else parking is actually free.
  • Very nice walk with amazing views. For sure to be recommended. We went in quite early, so it was not crowded. I can imagine the experience is maybe less impressive when there are more tourists. Hint: at the end of the walk, near the waterfall, there is a small path on the left direction Bled. The first part is uphill, through the woods, but after that there is a beautiful path through meadows that takes you back to the parking lot. Stunning view on the valley! Maybe it takes you an hour extra, but for sure worth it.
  • Absolutely beautiful walk through the gorge. Stunning opportunities for photos. I would highly recommend getting there early in the morning as tour buses come in around lunchtime, which makes it extremely busy! There is a small entrance fee, but it is well worth it!
  • This is a beautiful, easy hike. Partly on paths and partly on walking bridges built of iron/steel and wood. Enter from either top or bottom of the canyon. Beware parking in private land at the top, because it's where Google maps sends you and may result in a ticket. Small, simple cafe at the lower end. Some dogs might find the walking bridges tricky, due to irregular gaps in the planking.
