Pusty Hrad (Deserted Castle), Zvolen

(4.8/5 based on 20+ reviews on the web)
Pustý hrad is a castle whose ruins are located on a forested hill in the southern part of Zvolen in central Slovakia. With an area of 76,000 m² it is arguably one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. The original name was Zvolen Castle or Old Zvolen; Pustý hrad (meaning "deserted castle") is a much later name used to distinguish the ruin from the present-day Zvolen Castle. Pustý hrad consists of two parts, the Upper Castle and the Lower Castle. The strategic hill site upon the river Hron attracted settlers as early as the late Stone Age (Baden culture). A stone-earth wall discovered in 2009 under the western line of medieval fortification included shreds of pottery from the late Stone Age inside its filling. Research carried out at the Upper Castle in 1992 - 2008 by Václav Hanuliak also identified stone walls built during the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. Excavations have unearthed many precious prehistoric artifacts, including several big bronze treasures of the Lusatian culture, fragments from the Kyjatice culture, and even pottery imported from the Roman Empire. The subsequent Slavic medieval castle was founded in the 9th century.

  • For lovers of tourism it is a small "scoop"-vyšľapete it for 45 minutes, up basically nothing there, just a few of the original walls, but the view is really nice and you can learn a thing or two from the marked signs. Is it possible to go up the sidewalk, but also an asphalted road. There tends to be enough visitors, whether it is cold or the summer. I recommend a common output every year in early September, when lives and. ..

  • There's a car park near the ice hockey stadium where you can begin your hike. It takes about 40 minutes to get up to the ruins, after you arrive to the "lower castle" it's about 500m to the Horny Hrad...  more »
  • I was tempted by the words of the Guide on the hoary history and went to the more than hour-long hike, and eventually saw the ruins, small ruins of destroyed fortress long ago. Even the aura of yore. I never understood why there lead people.

  • Beautiful place with nice view of Zvolen. It's still a bit of a hike to get there, so might be a little challenging with young kids, but still very well worth it.
  • Nice place, short 40 min hike up. Very steep
  • Super ľahšia túra, kde dostanete za odmenu nádherný výhľad a zrúcaniny.
  • The ruins of the Pustého Castle provide a magnificent view of the Štiavnické vrchy, Kremnické vrchy, circular Javorie, Zvolen's fold, the river Hron, the field, the southern part of the greater Fatra, Low Tatras, and of course a nice even less pretty industrial eastern part of Wikipedia. The place to get more (at least four) access routes. The total length of the trip on the Desolate Castle is approximately 3 hours, the trail from the parking lot under the Pustým castle can be šmykľavý during rainy weather. The total elevation tour is about 300 m. During the exit of the enrichment of a small and a large rock on the rock turning andezitové prospects.
