Hrad Lietava, Zilina
(4.7/5 based on 20+ reviews on the web)
The Lietava Castle is an extensive castle ruin in the Súľov Mountains of northern Slovakia, between the villages of Lietava and Lietavská Svinná-Babkov in the Žilina District.HistoryThe castle was built after 1241, most likely as an administrative and military centre. In the early 14th century, it is mentioned with Máté Csák III, one of the powerful magnates in the Kingdom of Hungary. The castle changed hands until the 16th century when the Thurzó family gained it. It was reconstructed and fortified, and given its own military garrison. After the death of Imre Thurzó in 1621, it was divided between his heirs. After the ownership disputes in 1641, they lost interest in it. The castle report in 1698 said that the castle was uninhabited and there was only an archive, which was moved to the Orava Castle (Árva) in the 1760s. After that, the castle was abandoned and not used any more.TodayToday the castle is in the hands of the non-profit organisation Združenie na záchranu Lietavského hradu, which takes care about the castle and perform the conservation works on this ruined castle.

  • A little harder to get somewhere from where you can start your trip. But in general the hike here was awesome, took us approx 30-40 minutes to get up to the place from the village, but it was great pl...  more »
  • Lietava Castle is already under construction for a long time, though-it is worth to see. Ideal for walk-for families with children, active seniors, friends, hafanov:) To get to it can be a number of ways-I recommend the output via Lietavskú svinnú (the village below the Castle)-which is less strmejšia/less demanding-you get to through a meadow and woodland for the moment you are in the Castle. No guaranteed entry, offers scenic views of the surrounding area. Visit of the Castle you'd better apply only when the weather is nice. Even such a minor warning-the castle is a little dangerous in some places-thus primarily to look out for, in order to nenakláňali/nešmykli.

  • To the Castle you go walk ahead after a large field, then the path in the Woods. The castle is now under reconstruction, there was no admission fee. If you go with the dog, put him on top of the Guide. There are 2 free pobýhající tits. Inside is a small kiosk with snacks and souvenirs.
