#10 of 27 in Nature in Slovakia
The Tatra Mountains, Tatras or Tatra, are a mountain range that form a natural border between Slovakia and Poland. They are the highest mountain range in the Carpathian Mountains. The Tatras should be distinguished from the Low Tatras which are located south of the Tatra Mountains in Slovakia. The Tatra Mountains occupy an area of 785km², of which about 610km² lie within Slovakia and about 175km² on the territory of Poland. The highest peak, called Gerlach, at 2,655 m is located north of Poprad. The highest point in Poland, Rysy, at 2,499 m is located south of Zakopane. The Tatras' length, measured from the eastern foothills of the Kobyli Wierch to the southwestern foot of Ostry Wierch Kwaczański, in a straight line is 57km, and strictly along the main ridge, 80km. The range is only 19km wide. The Tatras' main ridge leads from Huciańska Pass in the west to Zdziarska Pass to the east. The Tatras are protected by law by the establishment of the Tatra National Park, Slovakia and the Tatra National Park, Poland, which are jointly entered in UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves. In 1992 the Polish and Slovak parks were jointly designated a transboundary biosphere reserve by UNESCO in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves under its Man and the Biosphere Programme.

  • What can I say it's a must to do before you die the views are amazing even under 2 foot of snow pretty easy to get round but remember if your going here in the winter get chains for your car wheels or...  more »
  • Previously, we never went to mountain tracks, but were this summer in the Tatras. Great place, wonderful nature! This is an incredibly cool! There are a few tracks-you can choose on the basis of training and time. But in General, impressed me that even people of the older generation, who are already under 60 years and at times I moved faster. In info centres, you can take the card-mountain routes they are free of charge. And liked. It is interesting to visit the Lakes! is impressive! The tracks go, and children from six to seven years, so it is safe to take them with you-turn out a good family outing. In short-I recommend! And in the winter in the Tatra mountains open ski slopes-so you can still enjoy.
