Orava Castle, Oravsky Podzamok

Categories: Castles, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.5/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web
One of Slovakia's most famous and popular fortresses, Orava Castle occupies a rocky crag overlooking the surrounding river valley. Though originally constructed during the 1200s, the castle underwent many reconstructions and restorations during the following centuries. You can visit the fortress, perched atop a 112 m (367 ft) high cliff, and explore its interior, which itself dates back to the 18th century. Take time to admire the castle's sturdy stone construction, with imposing walls built directly into the rock, and sheltered lower courtyard and church below. Joining the two-hour guided tour, offered in English, is the only way to enter the castle. To visit Orava Castle on your trip to Oravsky Podzamok, use our Oravsky Podzamok vacation generator.

  • This beautiful keepsake will surely be pleased to recommend a visit-Castle is in very good condition, it is something to look at. Guides on a very good level, there are also guided tours offered in the English language. Also ideal for a family trip, even if the weather does. Personally, I recommend a large circle-but you'll need to prepare for it, it takes approximately 3 hours and you have to overcome a considerable amount of stairs. I would probably even added that just because of the length of the show and the many tiny little step that is not suitable for children-I had the opportunity to listen to the child's cry, 3 hours of nervous parents who subsequently to children zúrili.

  • Beautiful old castle. Each half an hour a tour in Slovak starts. You can't go in without a tour. Prices for children are low. Even though we didn't understand the guide it was worth visiting.
  • If you are in the neighborhood it is worth a visit but don't drive more than 30 min specially to visit this castle since it mostly closed for renovations. Instead of the full 2h visit, they now do a 3...  read more »
  • Giving one star to this incredibly awesome castle because the only way you can visit is through a guided tour. The problem is these guided tours imply, and sometimes even openly lie that the castle was built by Slovaks, and in the country Slovakia. Neither is true as it was built in the Kingdom of of Hungary by Hungarian noblemen, whose portraits still hang on the walls. Conveniently, there is no mention of their nationality, either. FYI, all the antique books on display are in Hungarian as well, but once more there is no mention of this. In fact, there is no mention of Hungary at all during the entire tour, giving the impression this castle was built by Slovaks. As for Slovakia, it didn't exist until 1993
  • One of the best castles in Slovakia. Definitely worth the stop. Tours in English. Certain days they have reenactments. Beautiful region of Slovakia.
  • Beautiful castle in a nice region :) I recommend
  • A beautiful castle that I have already visited several times and will come back again.
  • Best example I have seen of a feudal Lord's castle. Ownership is intriguing. See this at night from the highway
