Orava Castle, Oravsky Podzamok

One of Slovakia's most famous and popular fortresses, Orava Castle occupies a rocky crag overlooking the surrounding river valley. Though originally constructed during the 1200s, the castle underwent many reconstructions and restorations during the following centuries. You can visit the fortress, perched atop a 112 m (367 ft) high cliff, and explore its interior, which itself dates back to the 18th century. Take time to admire the castle's sturdy stone construction, with imposing walls built directly into the rock, and sheltered lower courtyard and church below. Joining the two-hour guided tour, offered in English, is the only way to enter the castle. • You can get into the castle only with a guided tour. The tour was available only in Slovakian - was not very helpful for us. Haven said that, the young guide was extremely nice and after each explanat...  more »
  • The impressive castle. We really liked. Go inside only with a guided tour (tickets are bought at the bottom of the lock at the cashier). excursion in Slovak, but you can download audio guides in different languages, including Russian. Excursion lasts about 2 hours, during this time we watched the entire Castle and climbed to the top.

  • Beautiful, photogenic castle visible from faraway. Absolutely best attraction of Orava region. Visit in winter takes 1,5h and during main season can take more than 2 hours. With or without kids, nice ...  more »

  • I wanted to visit it on the way home, as a break from driving. Wasn't a great idea because it is only allowed to visit it with guide that has precise times to start the tour that lasts from 1 to 2:30 hours. From the outside it is spectacular. Sadly, from the side it looks best (the national/European road that passes by Orava) there is no possibility to stop for a photo. The next time I will take around 4 hours only for this, I think it's worth it!
  • Restored historical castle. Very good guided tours in multiple languages all throughout the day. Each tour takes about an hour. Make sure to bring good walking shoes as it's a steep climb up to the castle and there are a lot of stairs up and down on the tour. Deducting a star as you are not allowed take photos inside which was a bit disappointing.
  • Beautiful place... The castle looks amazing in and out, you most take the tour... The story of the castle is amazing!!!! 😉
  • Wonderful landmark! We had a mixed slovak/polish tour and it was definitely worth the 2 spent hours. English tours were also available and you can take photos inside for 3 Euros. Expozition was nice and the view from top is spectacular. Be prepared for steps :)
  • Nice Castle that feels more like a castle than a palace which is different then most we have visited. The tour took 1.5 hours and was fairly interesting. Only 3 English tours a day. Worth a visit.
