St. Martin's Cathedral, Bratislava
(4.2/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
See the former coronation church of Hungarian kings and the largest Gothic minstry in Slovakia at St. Martin's Cathedral, whose tall spire dominates the Old Town. Once a part of the city's fortification walls, the 85 m (279 ft) high tower is topped by the Hungarian crown set on a gilded cushion. The inside of the church features Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque decor, as well as 19th-century Viennese stained-glass windows. A prominent feature of the interior is an equestrian statue of St. Martin dressed like a hussar. The cathedral houses the relics of an early 7th-century saint, John the Merciful. • It is a beautiful Gothic Cathedral of the Eleventh century, where the Kings and Queens of Hungary have been crowned. It is also here that the "Missa Solennise" of Bethoven would have been played for the first time.

  • The Cathedral is beautiful, with a side entrance and not on the façade. Internal aisles and a Gothic style which, as he told the Guide, has many similarities with the Cathedral of Vienna, but with less funding. Beautiful stained glass Windows in the apse, where there is also a fresco where are written the names of the rulers here crowned. The Church seems to be on the edge of the city, but in reality behind him, where now stands a busy Freeway to 4 lanes, there was the rest of the old town, the Jewish quarter, which was demolished in the years of the regime. Definitely deserves to be seen

  • My favorite church in this city. It is located near the Castle and its beautiful tower is seen from the castle's walls and windows. The Cathedral is very impressive with lots of amazing altars and sta...  more »

  • Beautiful Cathedral with a lot of history behind it. Notice the gold-plated replica of the St. Stephen's crown on top of the tower. Maria Theresa, the only female ruler of the Habsburg monarchy, was crowned in this cathedral. Don't forget to visit the crypts below the Cathedral which are small but interesting to say the least. The chapel is of the Saint John the Merciful can be found inside the cathedral as well.
  • well-kept simple cathedral. it doesn't look like something special outside, the interior also isn't a great piece of art, but it's worth to see it. we can't forget it has a great historical value so for sure it's palce to visit
  • A slightly different cathedral and although it appears small from the outside it still exhibits greatest on the inside. The detailing in the ceiling is marvelous so it is worth a quick peak inside
  • Together with the Bratislava Castle, St. Martin's Cathedral welcomed us on 30.11.2015🏰. Please pay close attention to the golden crown on the top of its belfry. This crown gives the hint of the main function of the Cathedral between 1563-1830👑.
  • Beautiful. A part of the Old Town landscape. The landing around it is a good place to get some quiet relaxation.
