St. Martin's Cathedral, Bratislava

4.3
#5 of 73 in Historic Sites in Slovakia
See the former coronation church of Hungarian kings and the largest Gothic minstry in Slovakia at St. Martin's Cathedral, whose tall spire dominates the Old Town. Once a part of the city's fortification walls, the 85 m (279 ft) high tower is topped by the Hungarian crown set on a gilded cushion. The inside of the church features Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque decor, as well as 19th-century Viennese stained-glass windows. A prominent feature of the interior is an equestrian statue of St. Martin dressed like a hussar. The cathedral houses the relics of an early 7th-century saint, John the Merciful. • A wonderful cathedral. It was the coronation church of the Kingdom of Hungary centuries ago. I wish to come back and see the interior as well once.
  • Beautiful Cathedral with a lot of history behind it. Notice the gold-plated replica of the St. Stephen's crown on top of the tower. Maria Theresa, the only female ruler of the Habsburg monarchy, was crowned in this cathedral. Don't forget to visit the crypts below the Cathedral which are small but interesting to say the least. The chapel is of the Saint John the Merciful can be found inside the cathedral as well.
  • It's okay. Being so close to the main road with lots of houses around it makes it look very cramped.
  • Beautiful cathedral, all though nothing compared to the one in Vienna. I recommend the south side for photos with an effect full tree in the foreground.
  • Very beautiful cathedral made of different architecture styles. Beautiful inside too, where you can also see some skulls in the crypt beneath.

Where to stay in Bratislava

Save money on a trip to the pricey town of Bratislava by booking a private room or by staying in one of the many hostels. While there are hotels here, frequent business travelers have driven prices up. Find accommodation in Stary Mesto--the city's Old Town--and experience the medieval charm of the area, such as winding streets, old churches, and a hill-top castle. Consider staying on the Danube for riverside views. Be sure to check the reviews of your lodging ahead of time; the quality of accommodations can vary.
