Michael's Gate (Michalska brana), Bratislava

4.2
Topped with the statue of St. Michael slaying the dragon, Michael's Gate (Michalska brana) represents the oldest preserved part of the city's medieval fortifications. Built around 1300, the gate acquired its present appearance during an 18th-century reconstruction. Follow the marked historical crown path through the gate and notice a disk with a compass pointing in the directions of the world's major cities. The bridge on the other side of the passage arches over the last remaining section of a medieval moat. Visit the clock tower to see the exhibition of weapons there and climb to the sixth-floor balcony for vistas of the old town, castle, and surrounding landscapes. • The gate is huge but there's nothing incredible about it. It is a totally must see but not out of the ordinary.  more »
  • The port is a cozy little corner of Bratislava's old town. How to go so you end up here or later

  • Not a lot to see but it marks the start of the Old Town. From here you can explore the streets and the little bars.  more »

  • One of the symbols of Bratislava, the only preserved city gate from medieval times. You can go inside to visit Museum of historical weapons and enjoy the nice view on the roofs of historical city center.
  • The entrance into the historical centre. Nice view from the tower. Not that exciting but definitely worth checking out!
  • Good place for a walk... many shops and restaurants.. pleasant
  • Picturesque place with option to go on the top of the tower which I definitely recommend. There is an knights permanent exposition while you climb the tower. Usually you can find music performers under the gate but beggars are not unusual as well.
  • The only land mark I could find. Bratislava is poorly maintained - weeds and graffiti everywhere. British stag parties. Homelessness everywhere. Crumbling buildings. I'm never going back unless it gets a good injection of EU funding.

Where to stay in Bratislava

Save money on a trip to the pricey town of Bratislava by booking a private room or by staying in one of the many hostels. While there are hotels here, frequent business travelers have driven prices up. Find accommodation in Stary Mesto--the city's Old Town--and experience the medieval charm of the area, such as winding streets, old churches, and a hill-top castle. Consider staying on the Danube for riverside views. Be sure to check the reviews of your lodging ahead of time; the quality of accommodations can vary.
