Michael's Gate (Michalska brana), Bratislava

#9 of 1,076 in Things to do in Slovakia
Topped with the statue of St. Michael slaying the dragon, Michael's Gate (Michalska brana) represents the oldest preserved part of the city's medieval fortifications. Built around 1300, the gate acquired its present appearance during an 18th-century reconstruction. Follow the marked historical crown path through the gate and notice a disk with a compass pointing in the directions of the world's major cities. The bridge on the other side of the passage arches over the last remaining section of a medieval moat. Visit the clock tower to see the exhibition of weapons there and climb to the sixth-floor balcony for vistas of the old town, castle, and surrounding landscapes. • A really nice place to spend one day there. We walked a lot in this area around and it was very nice to see the shops. If you look around you will find a lot of nice bars, cafe and sightseeing options. It feels very touristy but that is normal in such areas. We spend some days in March, so the weather was almost perfect. But I am very sure in summer is this place very chill! If you like wine look around the small streets there are some nice wine bars around.
  • There is a museum inside the tower, the entry (with student or senior discount) is just 2,5€ and includes the pharmacy museum (a little upwards on the same street) and the arms Museum which is located inside the tower. The exhibitions on the arm museum is poor and unsurprising but it is worth going upstairs to the pinnacle of the tower from where you get an awesome view of the Castle and the old city. The pharmacy museum is a small two-room space where old jars are shown, not quite worth it unless you are into old pottery, plus it doesn't even have toilets.
  • Museum of arms + terrace high above city centre. Museum takes you through the entire history of arms around Bratislava. From ancient to modern times with a couple of foreign arms on top. View from the tower terrace gives you a view of the large part of the city centre from above. Definitely a go to place during sunny days in Bratislava.
  • This is one of the mist popular and most important historical landmarks in Bratislava and should be included in any city visit. Make sure to take a printed guide to get details on the historical significance of the site.
  • The only remaining city-gate in old Bratislava. Worth to visit, nice view from the. roof-top terrase ... interesting exibition.
