Devin Castle (hrad), Bratislava

4.4
#1 of 55 in Museums in Slovakia
Strategically situated on a cliff above the confluence of two important rivers, Devin Castle (hrad) bears evidence of prehistoric settlements as well as Roman and medieval ruins. The fortification walls encircle a landscape of open courtyards, staircases, and towers in uneven states of repair. Look for the small watchtower called the Maiden Tower balancing on a sole rock. Legend has it that many imprisoned lovesick daughters plunged to their deaths from this tower. See the foundations and the tiny model of the first Christian church north of the Danube. The castle houses a museum exhibiting archaeological objects and offers a range of outdoor activities, such as boat rides, hiking trails, and horseback riding. The upper castle has been closed to the public since 2008, due to reconstruction. The castle ruins are nothing exceptional, the facilities around control gauges, to do just for the ride on the Danube

The castle of sail on a small pleasure boat hour in not too easy, but visit Devin is imperative. The harsh fortress on the rock, a magnificent view of the point of confluence of two rivers: the Danube, which is not blue, and some Gumbo, and dark green Morava. Entrance and two modest Museum 5 euro; persons over 60-50% discount, not only local, but also foreigners. We were in a terrible heat, so unspeakably overjoyed to see a small fountain with potable water)

The ruins of Devin Castle, destroyed by the army of Napoleon, is a must see if you are in Bratislava. Is Devin, not far from Bratislava and accessible by bus. Entrance costs 5 euros but it's worth it all, a really nice place with a nice landscape. Nearby there is also a nice Park and a few bars/restaurants.

It was the highest moment in my trip to Slovakia. Devín Castle is amazing and have a lot of history to tell. Easier to reach by public transport. You can spend hours there just admiring the view.

Nice combination of mountain, river and monument views. Great destination to get out of the city and relax for a few hours. Best place to visit in Bratislava, hands down.

Nice place to stay. Be aware you can only pay cash for the entry. The cash machine is only walking 10mins away close to the church in the center. 5 EUR adults, 2.50 for the youngsters. This money they probably use to maintain the donkey and the sheep. Inside there is all kind of historical information. The site give an impression on how they lived there in the past. On the top there are nice views over the whole country side. It is an amazing site to enjoy your self brought coffee, thee and biscuits. Layback, forget your daily tasks and go floating into your dreams at the marvelous place! Cheers!

Local crafts and art and nice views and museum but also: Very important crossroad for Europe and Slovaks. This strategic location dubbed the gate atop a massive rock has switched hands many times for thousands of years. Experience how the Lords of Gara must have felt when they ruled the lands in medieval times or Napoleon when he blew up their Castle centuries later and how Slovaks feel about this place, the birthplace of our modern Slovak language.

Nice castle, beautiful views of the countryside and river. There are a couple of exhibitions inside as well. Entrance is €5 and €2.50 for student / seniors or children. There's drinking water fountain at the top, it's a lifesaver on hot days! You can get there by bus, either 28 or 29 from Most SNP (Novy Most).

Where to stay in Bratislava

Save money on a trip to the pricey town of Bratislava by booking a private room or by staying in one of the many hostels. While there are hotels here, frequent business travelers have driven prices up. Find accommodation in Stary Mesto--the city's Old Town--and experience the medieval charm of the area, such as winding streets, old churches, and a hill-top castle. Consider staying on the Danube for riverside views. Be sure to check the reviews of your lodging ahead of time; the quality of accommodations can vary.
