Devin Castle (hrad), Bratislava

4.4
#1 of 122 in Museums in Slovakia
Strategically situated on a cliff above the confluence of two important rivers, Devin Castle (hrad) bears evidence of prehistoric settlements as well as Roman and medieval ruins. The fortification walls encircle a landscape of open courtyards, staircases, and towers in uneven states of repair. Look for the small watchtower called the Maiden Tower balancing on a sole rock. Legend has it that many imprisoned lovesick daughters plunged to their deaths from this tower. See the foundations and the tiny model of the first Christian church north of the Danube. The castle houses a museum exhibiting archaeological objects and offers a range of outdoor activities, such as boat rides, hiking trails, and horseback riding. The upper castle has been closed to the public since 2008, due to reconstruction. • I'm in a wheelchair, went with family and I had to stay at the entrance to the Castle, because the pavement is not suitable to go with wheelchair (could do a side asphalt for wheelchairs, baby strollers, etc...), or have no parking ENTO reserved for disabled near the Castle

  • From Bratislava catch the 29 bus from the Most SNP (UFO bridge )(the road not the actual bus station). In Devín walk in the direction of the bus for about 100m and turn left. Although largely ruined t...  more »
  • I like it here very much. Starting from a slow rise up the hills where the walk fat curly lamb, soft grass like carpet. In the fortress itself all the true natural, living history. Fantastic views to Austria and Slovakia and the merging of the rivers at the foot of the Castle. Here it is nice to just sit back, look at the neighborhood. In the yard there is a deep well, you can count the seconds before the water reaches from the bottom. Place of power in Slovakia

  • We cycled along the Danube to the castle. It was so crowded that we didn't go inside but enjoyed the view from outside. It was a nice ride, but right now lots of roadwork going up on the right hand side. Best avoid that. Lots of walnut and plum trees along the route. Take some plastic bags with you for foraging. Plenty of beer stops along the way. Good views of the city coming back down the river. Return to the city on the other side of the river. It's worth going down to the Apollo bridge and cycling across. If you want to shop, Au Park shopping center is very convenient before you cross the river. Less crowded than the other side. Much cooler and relaxed shopping area. Enjoy a cold beer beneath the UFO restaurant below the SNP bridge under the trees. Great view of Castle, Cathedral, etc etc
  • This is a definite must if visiting Bratislava. The first Sunday of each month they have a medieval fair which includes axe throwing bow and arrow shooting. There is a jousting show and everyone is in traditional costumes set in the time. This is truly a great place to take the family and to wander around. The castle itself is also very good to walk around it has a little Museum within the castle and is very informative. It also has breathtaking views of the surrounding areas including Austria.
  • Really nice view of the valley from the top and easy to walk up. Attractions along the trail up (takes 5 minutes to go up) include and echo cave and is fun. The river cruise from Bratislava is also nice
  • Super beautiful, go there. Paid 5 Euro entrance, they have nice toilets and a drinking fountain. I recommend reading some info inside the cave-exhibition about the history. For example the place was blown into pieces by napoleon, and has been in the hands of many rulers.
  • A must see in Bratislava. A really scenic castle, took a boat there which was 1.5 hrs there and 30 mins back but very worth it as a great trip. Have to pay to get into the castle but very reasonable and get to see caves, excavations, free archery shooting, jousting. Interesting guides all included. A great trip
