Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum, Bratislava

4.7
Set on a peninsula extending into the Danube River, Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum boasts an extensive collection of modern artwork from international artists. Designed to resemble a sort of modernist Roman galley, the sleek museum features a large collection of pieces from the Netherlands because of founder Gerard Meulensteen's own Dutch heritage. You'll also find plenty of works representing Slovakia, the U.S., and other European countries. Swing by the gift shop and pick up an art-related souvenir or print of one of the museum's pieces. You can also stroll through the grounds outside to admire a series of modern art sculptures. • This museum is the most amazing venue built in post Communist Bratislava. A well designed building hugging the Danube with a magnificent sculpture garden, similar to the Louisiana Museum in Copenhagen...  more »
  • Very interesting modern art museum located on an artificial island in the middle of the Danube. I was there during a morning of bad weather. Is easily accessible by bus (90 it seems) who takes near the new bridge, stops right outside the Museum. After the visit you can stop by the bar for a coffee and maybe a slice of some local cake. (I recommend the Marlenka!)

  • If you have a car, a little hassle to find the bus and ride for an hour but it's worth it. the Museum is located on the danube and a coffee on the terrace after the visit does not refuse (the pastries are very good). June 2017 shows are wacky and different, I recommend to lovers of contemporary art, but not only. In addition, visit very attractive price.

  • This museum is really worth seeing. I was amazed by the very fine selection of the art works. Even the most avantgarde ones very ingenious.
  • This place has been inspired by the Lusianna in Copenhagen. The atmosphere, the light and the special something so far out of town. Everything is harmonious here and art can unfold. The building is so spacious, that you should loose more than 2 hours. Especially since the café also deserved a stop. A must see!
  • We go every 2 months or so. A fantastic place near the city. Go on a sunny day to get the most out of you go visit, with the outdoor and roof top sculpture garden.
  • Perfect fit for location, also very nice place. However, prepare yourself with theory of modern art before visit.
  • I would give it from 3 to 4 for the museum exhibits, but it is a place to have a look at what somewhat call "contemporary" or "modern" [art]. Mostly (or only) Slovakian artists are represented here. And I would taste from 4 to 5 for the museum shop - a very decent selection of art books. Many rare and worth of having.

Where to stay in Bratislava

Save money on a trip to the pricey town of Bratislava by booking a private room or by staying in one of the many hostels. While there are hotels here, frequent business travelers have driven prices up. Find accommodation in Stary Mesto--the city's Old Town--and experience the medieval charm of the area, such as winding streets, old churches, and a hill-top castle. Consider staying on the Danube for riverside views. Be sure to check the reviews of your lodging ahead of time; the quality of accommodations can vary.
