The Substation, Singapore

3.3
#90 of 127 in Nightlife in Singapore
Founded in 1990 by the late Kuo Pao Kun, The Substation is Singapore’s first independent contemporary arts centre. The Substation presents and co-presents a wide range of artists and programmes, from traditionally trained dancers to local rock bands; established visual artists to young poets; publications to international short film festivals; experimental theatre to seminal conferences on Singapore arts and culture. Over the last twenty years, The Substation has worked with some of Singapore’s most critically acclaimed artists, writers and intellectuals. Just as importantly, The Substation is constantly working with younger and emerging artists, providing them with space and support. The centre is always open to new proposals and ideas.

The Substation is centrally located in the city’s civic district. Its venues include a black box theatre, gallery, dance studio, random room (a multi-purpose room) and two multi-function classrooms.

  • This is the first independent Art Center in Singapore. It has a black box theater, a gallery, a dance studio, a meeting room and two multi-function classrooms. There used to be a small garden where young rookies played. Today this place is occupied by a bar. You need to search the web for their shows.

  • The surrounding place is still undergoing reconstruction turning into a park with pubs and perhaps some high end eateries. It is just besides SMU Law school.
  • Singapore Art Week 2019 Great art work!We have a great experience here!
  • Great place to appreciate the local arts. Look out on their website for any running or upcoming shows
  • Indie art events are held here. Supports the home grown talents. Small exhibit space available for rent. Capoeira and dance class available
  • The place where I did my creative edge training by i-theatre. Such a pity it has ended but seriously loved the place though I feel that more cleaning could be better the space is big enough for creative juices to flow! Amazing programmes they have there too! :) toilets available too however the toilets are usually very broken and hardly fixed and hardly there is toilet paper :)
