St Joseph's Church, Singapore

(4.4/5 based on 50+ reviews on the web)
Saint Joseph's Church is a Roman Catholic church in Singapore. It is located along Victoria Street in the Rochor Planning Area, within the Central Area of Singapore's central business district. The church was constructed from 1906–12 with its foundation stone laid two years earlier. The building was built in the Gothic style by the Portuguese Mission. Saint Joseph's Church is most noted for its annual Good Friday procession.HistoryThe history of Saint Joseph's Church and that of its predecessor, the Church of São José, both built on the same site, is inextricably linked with the Portuguese Mission. Father Francisco da Silva Pinto e Maia of Porto, head of the Portuguese Mission, arrived from Goa in 1826 and founded the Mission in Singapore. When he died in 1850, he left his money and some land for the building of a small church. His funds were augmented by a gift from the King of Portugal and the church was called São José. It was built by the man who succeeded him, the Reverend Vincente de Santa Catarina from 1851 to 1853.In 1906, the Church of São José was pulled down. The present Saint Joseph's Church, completed in 1912, was built on the same site by the notable firm Swan & MacLaren.

  • St. Joseph Church is located diagonally across from the InterContinental Hotel in Bugis. Many United Kingdom church membership in Singapore was a United Kingdom territory, but where is the Catholic Church. In Singapore, however, assumes mixture, such as Chinese, Malay, India rights and Arab interracial, religion, insignificant things, such as the difference between the United Kingdom Church and Catholic?

  • This church was built in 1853, as the first Catholic Church in Singapore. Building of magnificent onion domes can be seen now is the reconstruction in 1912. Arches on the side of the Church are also great so please wrap look try please. The nearest station stands facing Queen Street in Bugis MRT station. Exactly as front is a giant Singapore National Library building.

more »

  • Although the person who picked up my call was really rude and contradicted what the Catholic church promoting to be inclusive, the church however is a really nice place to pray and is located in a central area that is accessible. It's just across the national library and there are other church in the vicinity such as Saints Peter and Paul which you can explore too. Really should go.
  • This church is in the middle of the Bugis-Bras Basah area. Very accessible. You won't miss it. Confessions from 11:30 am to 1 pm (or so) every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I forgot the other schedules. They have masses at 1:15 and 6:30 pm on weekdays. Saturday anticipated mass at 5 pm. Sunday masses at 8 am, 10 am and 5 pm.
  • Beautiful church that is much improved after aircon was installed. A very authentic experience of old-school catholic mass.
  • visit on mournty Thursday with my girl. it's been many years I think almost 19 years that I didn't visit this church. Last time visit on Good Friday with my mum in law. This church touches my girl so much that she said wow it's the most beautiful church I ever seen. We are going to attend Easter Mass on Saturday night with whole family. Thank you St Joseph!
  • Nice church and excellent choir. But the show off soloist conductor uncle is soooo boring.
