Sentosa Merlion, Sentosa Island

(3.7/5 based on 1,500+ reviews on the web)
Come face-to-face with one Singapore's symbols at Sentosa Merlion, a giant statue of a creature with a lion's head and a body of a fish. Ride in a elevator up to the mouth of the 37 m (120 ft) fish-lion statue, where you can pick up your prosperity coin--included in the ticket price--and ring the prosperity bell for good luck. From the mouth of the creature you can also enjoy sweeping views over the city and take one of Singapore's most iconic photos, in the jaws of a lion. Put Sentosa Merlion on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Sentosa Island vacation planner.

  • The large lion figure rises above the the course on Sentosa. Evening she is brightly illuminated. Well adapts to the environment.

  • We only wished it spewed water like its Marina Bay brother/sister. Very well maintained and makes a good venue for photography  more »

  • 37m high. A 4min video explains the story of the Merlion before you take the elevator to the head and mouth of the Merlion. Breathtaking view of the southern islands. On a clear day, can even view the Indonesian Island.
  • The iconic Merlion. The view from the rooftop is good. The background story of the merlion is highly amusing.
  • Covering this spot is a must if you are on Singapore trip. The view from top of the merlion is mesmerizing. You get a nice small souvenir once you enter the merlion. Try and visit this place in the evening, as the lighting around merlion adds to the beauty. Check the closing time though before you visit.
  • Recognize this is tourist trap central, but it would be a shame to have never visited during my short stint in Singapore. Entry to enter the Merlion is about $10 per person- once you hand in your ticket you are given a card that you can redeem later for a golden prosperity coin along with another card to collect 'stamps' along your journey into the statue to be redeemed for a 'prize' at the gift shop. On top of that, you'll also receive a coupon for a free coffee at the cafe upon exit. Once you enter, you're in a cave with some nice images and club like lighting to get you amped to be inside, and you can collect your stamps at a few of the stops along the way.At the end of the hall, you must wait to enter a screening room where you will watch a short film on the history of Singapore. While generally lackluster, it was honestly a bit helpful to understand the context of Merlion (I'm so lame and never realized it was half lion and half mermaid--- slow moment). Upon film completion, you are led into another hall where you insert the card you received into the mouth of a golden merlion (there are multiple) and it then spits out a golden merlion coin for you to take home. You then take an elevator up to the top of the Merlion-- you can choose to either make a right or left, heading to either its head or mouth. The head view could be nice in theory, but there is so much construction in the distance it really falters the view. The 'mouth' is a little more exciting. Ring the prosperity bell and have your picture taken in the mouth by a professional photographer who waits there, and he'll also generously take one with your phone or personal camera. Upon going down, you enter a souvenir shop.. the stamps you had collected are essentially exchanged for coupons for things in Sentosa (found it to be completely useless), bu then you exit through the cafe and you can get your free coffee ($1 extra to make it iced). It's awfully strong, so not my preference, but hey it was included. Essentially, the cost to get in and what you experience was not bad at all. It is relatively short and shouldn't take you more than 45 minutes. The tower itself lights up magnificently at night and during the holiday season, there are some nice light shows to witness.
  • A 10 story building which gives perfect view of complete sentosa island and sea surrounding it
