River Safari, Singapore

3.4
#1 of 7 in Theme Parks in Singapore
Explore the ecosystems of some of the world's great rivers at River Safari. You can visit exhibits inspired by many of the world's great rivers, including the Nile, Congo, and Yangtze. Keep an eye out for the stars of the show, the zoo's two giant pandas Kai Kai and Jia Jia. You can also see smaller red pandas and exotic pheasants in the pandas' forest. Finally, take a boat ride through the jungle on the Amazon River Quest. Don't buy your tickets for the boat ride in advance, as organizers reserve the right to cancel this activity in case of rains. • This is a tiny side-attraction of the Singapore Zoo. Unlike the Zoo where you can easily spend an entire day, the River Safari takes just 3 hours (maximum) to go through. Visitors will enjoy the relaxing River Cruises, the large aquarium to rest your feet and view manatees in a cool, dark area and the Panda enclosure. The panda enclosure is a very simple attraction where you literally watch the pandas eat and sleep and eat and sleep. They are so adorable that you would not mind wasting 20 minutes of your life staring at them.
  • If there is no long queues you can complete complete everything within 2 hours. We went on a public holiday and there was a queue almost took half an hour on both rides. So better avoid holidays as both rides are actually around 15 minutes and I really think it is not worth to queue for long time. Honestly for me nothing much exciting here. I would rather allocate more time for Singapore Zoo rather visit here.
  • First and foremost - River safari is not all about river safari. What i mean is, if you are expecting river safari to be a nice boat ride wading through river waters while you enjoy watching aquatic animals and various other amphibian/terrestrial animals, then stop your imagination. It's NOT like that. River safari's theme revolves around various big rivers around the globe, which include likes of Ganges, Amazon, Yangtze, etc and various aquatic animal life inhabiting in those rivers. So it's necessarily an aquarium, segregated in various sections. These sections are dedicated to rivers as mentioned above, and have numerous tanks containing aquatic life living in that particular river. Hence, the name river safari ! But wait. it does not really disappoint you so much. They do have a real river safari as you expect, and as described at the start of this review. it lasts for about 15 minutes, wherein you get a very short glimpse of Rhinos and Giraffes located in the zoo section. Not really fascinating thing. But overall, it's good. Nicely arranged and informative aquarium. PS: If you want to see a Giant Panda (which is quite out of place), you must do River Safari. Zoo section does not have a Panda.
  • Another great attraction that's just besides the zoo. Awesome exhibits taking you on a boat ride through the artificially made habitats resembling rainforest and its animals. Easily spend over half a day here especially with children. Well kept landscapes and very tidy place. Highly recommended!
  • Nice experience. Expect to spend about 2 hours. That's where you can see pandas and anaconda. The boat rides are fun, but it is actually smaller part of the overall experience. Liked huge freshwater aquariums with manatees and fish from different major river habitats around the world. Saw many educational activities for younger children. Overall, I think that it is a good attraction for adults as well as for families with children. Not sure that there is enough excitement for teenagers. Be aware, that if you are short on time visiting Singapore, the travel time to the zoo from the downtown area is at least one hour. Would recommend a taxi if you are not on strict budget especially if you're a family or group traveling together.

Where to stay in Singapore

For leading chain hotels, head to the area around Orchard Road, considered the tourist center of Singapore due to its varied selection of rooms, good travel links, and tourist-focused businesses. At the eastern end of the road, you'll find more luxurious and expensive options, with hotels located in impressive colonial-era architecture. North and south of this main artery, backpacker hostels and budget hotels provide affordable rooms with basic facilities.
