#24 of 198 in Shopping in Singapore
Ngee Ann City is a shopping and commercial centre located on Orchard Road, Singapore. The S$520 million building was officially opened on 21 September 1993 by then Prime Minister, Goh Chok Tong., a slang-abbreviation of the anchor tenant's name, Takashimaya.Ngee Ann City currently houses the High Commission of New Zealand, which is situated on the 15th floor of Tower A.HistoryIn the 1950s, the land that Ngee Ann City sits on was a burial ground, owned and managed by Ngee Ann Kongsi. It was part of a parcel of land known as Tai Shan Ting, which was bounded by Orchard Road, Paterson Road and Grange Road. A ten-storey Ngee Ann Building was then built on the site, and was demolished to make way for Ngee Ann City.Redevelopment of the site was first considered as early as 1967. Ngee Ann City was planned by Ngee Ann Development and the Orchard Square Development Corporation in the late 1980s. Raymond Woo, the architect who designed the complex, drew inspiration from the Great Wall of China. The intent was to reflect the dignity, solidity and strength of the Ngee Ann Kongsi. Wong spent five years designing and overseeing the project. The land belonging to Ngee Ann Kongsi was a much sought-after piece of real estate in Singapore. Ng Teng Fong of Far East Organisation was unsuccessful in his bid to buy the land, even after upping his offer to S$175 million from S$140 million. The land was also sought by the owners of Hilton International Hotel.

  • A giant mall with many restaurants and high-end boutique. The supermarket in the basement is excellent for its fresh products. Even though the architecture seem rather old, this place offers a lot of food options and also many famous branded products. This is one of the old standards of Southeast Asian shopping, which has a good mix of department store, boutiques and restaurants which stands the test of time. This is one of the most popular malls in Singapore with the famous Japanese department store Takashimaya which is located here on 5-levels. They sell everything here including fresh food from the basement food court to branded cosmetics or clothes. The service from the sales staff is excellent. They are very friendly, approachable and gentle in handling customers.
  • A great shopping mall. You can get anything you want here. From shopping to dining. I Love to come here although the parking rates is on the high side (Remember to top up your cash card before heading here) but its all worth it. Chance upon D' Good Cafe and had my lunch there, food is GOOD. Had the truffle pasta, lobster roll, roasted chicken breast. Everything is so good👍👍👍
  • Many shops in this departmental store. Especially when now is Christmas Season, they have staff to help you specially wrap the presents you buy at the store...the paper bag, wrapping paper, window display are all the same theme and is always very nice and attractive. During festive period might have nice gifts ideas, or greater discount for you to buy your items.
  • This place has all the branded goods and best restaurants. Very popular among tourists and residents here. It has all types of merchandise, eateries, food paradise.Cold Storage B1and Best Electrical Appliances on L5. Occasionly they have events on B1.
  • This mall has been around for a very long time and the anchor tenants have not changed at all. Takashimaya is a huge department store occupying 7 floors worth of space selling an extremely wide range of goods including household ware, clothing, sports goods, footwear, food. Within its space, it also has other tenants like a supermarket and an optician shop. The other anchor tenant is Kinokuniya. Even though most other book stores have closed in Singapore, this store is still going strong with a huge selection of books and there are always lots of book lovers buying and browsing.

Where to stay in Singapore

For leading chain hotels, head to the area around Orchard Road, considered the tourist center of Singapore due to its varied selection of rooms, good travel links, and tourist-focused businesses. At the eastern end of the road, you'll find more luxurious and expensive options, with hotels located in impressive colonial-era architecture. North and south of this main artery, backpacker hostels and budget hotels provide affordable rooms with basic facilities.
