The neighborhood has roots as a humble fishing village and was once known for its production of paperbark trees. The area's rich history can still be witnessed today, evidenced by the prominence of Malay culture and heritage. In 1822 the area was allocated to the Malay Sultan and Muslim community, including Arab and Bugis traders.
