Cheery promenades bring an eclectic blend of history and culture together at Kampong Glam. Along the promenades you'll find quirky boutiques, international cuisine, and traditional wares such as rugs, perfumes, and clothing. The neighborhood has roots as a humble fishing village and was once known for its production of paperbark trees. The area's rich history can still be witnessed today, evidenced by the prominence of Malay culture and heritage. In 1822 the area was allocated to the Malay Sultan and Muslim community, including Arab and Bugis traders.
