City Hall (Gradska kuca), Subotica

4.7
#1 of 18 in Things to do in Subotica
Considered by many to be the city's most beautiful structure, City Hall (Gradska kuca) is the largest and one of the most lavish buildings in this part of Serbia. As it was the main governmental building, some of the greatest Serbian artists and architects of the time were involved in the four-year construction. It was finally completed in 1912, showcasing exceptionally modern architecture for its day--Hungarian folklore elements and ceramic and wrought-iron floral ornaments adorn most of its interiors. Take photos of the 76 m (249 ft) tall building and pay attention to the vivid stained glass windows. You can also access the 45.5 m (149 ft) high observation balcony, which offers unmatched views of the surrounding town and landscape. • Very interesting place - but the guided tour was only a joke... The guiding was in serbian - even if I was asked what language I spoke at the entrance. I didn't get any information unless I asked for it. And what should I ask for? I hadn't got a clue of anything...Besides - we had to run through the facilities with very short stops in each room. The climbing of all the stairs to the watch tower could be exhausting for those not fit, and should perhaps be mentioned at the entrance. One of the women in the group had severe problems to reach the top. Maybe the worst was that we only got a few minutes up there before we had to rush back down. The guide said it was much better in the summer... Well - too bad for us who were there in November... All in all the experience was disappointing due to the harsh guide - who seemed to have been forced to take the tour. But I would love to explore The City Hall and the tower again - without the time rope around my neck... It was very beautiful! And the view from the roof was amazing!
  • Breathtaking building decorated according to the Hungarian Secession Style. Vivid colours, nice carved wooden decoration. The fireplace with Zsolnay tiles are amazingly beautiful. No doubts, the inhabitants can be proud of this place.
  • Amazing place to visit (outside and inside) in an Art Nouveau town which is a hidden gem of this art style
  • Great experience the short visit (20') with English speaking guide. The visit has fixed timetable at 12.00 a.m. from the tourist office next to the main door. Cost 100 SDN.
  • Very nice building, interior iz amazing....
