Studenica Monastery, Serbia
Categories: Sacred & Religious Sites, Tourist Spots
The World Heritage Site represents one of the greatest Serb Orthodox monasteries in existence. Dating back to the 12th century, this Romanesque and the Byzantine complex features fortification walls and two churches surrounded by vivid gardens and rolling hills. When visiting, you'll need to follow the winding forest roads that lead to this white marble structure--the mother-church of all Serbian temples. Once there, take photos of the sights and enter the quiet monastery, filled with 13th- and 14th-century Byzantine-style frescos. View centuries-old artifacts and priceless treasures. The complex looks impeccable, despite countless Ottoman attacks and a devastating earthquake in the 17th century.
