Cele Kula, Nis

Ruin
Standing 4 m (13 ft), Cele Kula features human skulls built into a wall. As the 1809 Battle of Čegar was coming to an imminent end for the grossly outnumbered Serbian army, the commander Stevan Sinđelić shot at a magazine of gun powder, killing the remaining soldiers from both sides. To commorate the victory, the Ottoman leader ordered decapitation of all 952 fallen Serbian soldiers. The heads were skinned, stuffed, and built into a wall. Today, you can see the construction in a museum building. Only 54 skulls remain, as many were stolen and buried by family members, and others have been destroyed over time. If you wish to hear the entire story, seek out a guide at the site. Use our Nis itinerary planner to arrange your visit to Cele Kula and other attractions in Nis.

  • If you're in Nis then this is worth a visit simply because it is so unusual. It only takes a couple of minutes to see, so don't travel from too far away. It's small and a bit out of the town centre.  more »
  • We had small problem to find a ticket office - is before the small bridge close to the free parking place.  more »
  • The Tower of the skulls of Nis (Cele Kula) is, of course, a different historical monument. It will delight those who like catacombs and macabre places. However, it should be noted that the most interesting is the history of the Tower, since skulls are just 60. In his time must have been a terrifying monument.
