Cele Kula, Nis
(3.8/5 based on 140+ reviews on the web)
Standing 4 m (13 ft), Cele Kula features human skulls built into a wall. As the 1809 Battle of Čegar was coming to an imminent end for the grossly outnumbered Serbian army, the commander Stevan Sinđelić shot at a magazine of gun powder, killing the remaining soldiers from both sides. To commorate the victory, the Ottoman leader ordered decapitation of all 952 fallen Serbian soldiers. The heads were skinned, stuffed, and built into a wall. Today, you can see the construction in a museum building. Only 54 skulls remain, as many were stolen and buried by family members, and others have been destroyed over time. If you wish to hear the entire story, seek out a guide at the site. Use our Nis itinerary planner to arrange your visit to Cele Kula and other attractions in Nis.

  • Should have been a warning to the Serbs, and instead is a clear example where victims are morally higher than those the han took his own life! Let us move on to the practical side. You can also arrive by bus (60rsd) is also the last stop. But I'm here and everything was closed: you have to go back to the cage outside (looks like a newsstand) where you buy tickets. It costs 150, but you ask the ticket from 200 (also includes median, archaeological museum, bunker red cross): SVI OBJEKTI GROWN, it was snowing and it made it a very special experience. It is only one and single Chapel, I would say about 20 square meters, with a wall on 4 sides with the 58 lyrics were. Sufficiently disturbing. A real opportunity to do a treatise on Anatomy: I've never seen so many lyrics all together! Many still have teeth. Some people have a high forehead, who pointed chin: but strangely all retain a pride. If you want you can visit in 10 ' ... but better to linger. What's in most over the wall of skulls? only a skull under-teca. Escort very helpful and informative. A must-to-do, perhaps the most important monument in the city.
