Trg Republike, Belgrade

4.0
#2 of 14 in Shopping in Serbia
Civic Center Historic Walking Area
Head to Trg Republike, arguably the city's most famous meeting spot and a central hub surrounded by cafes and contemporary restaurants. Lying at the very heart of the capital, the site also hosts notable buildings like the National Museum and the National Theatre. You'll probably see people gathered "by the horse"--the prominent statue of Prince Mihajlo, erected in 1882 to commemorate the successful expulsion of the Ottomans from Serbia after centuries of occupation. Snap photos of the monuments and have a drink or meal at one of the nearby venues. After a walk in this culturally abundant area, you can catch a bus here to virtually any other point in the city. Trg Republike is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Belgrade Edition.

  • Don't expect too much, it's a nice square, but it's fairly small and surrounded by a mix of newer and older buildings. There was a market with local produce aimed at tourists as well.  more »
  • Nice square in the centre of Belgrade - fairly busy area. When we visited the National Museum was closed so we weren't able to visit.  more »

  • As a tourist attraction this place is nice but not to write back home about. But it is a must because exactly here start the Belgrade free tours, which are great, at least those we made. We took two tours with Jelena with the Orange Umbrella and it was very interesting. 2 hours each tour.
  • Great place to relax and enjoy a drink. Can be crowded at times but if you're in Belgrade you definitely need to visit the square. Lots of shops/ tours/ activities.
  • Good starting point for one seeking to meet Belgrade. Very popular among tourists as well as meeting place of many locals. Good bars and restaurants. In close proximity you can find many other famous spots Belgrade has to offer.
  • The place of great importance where modern history of Serbia is made. Monumental buildings remember the acts that many citizens have forgotten so it's definitely a place worthy of visit. Your tour guides should tell you the stories that make this place so unique.
  • There's people here every day and all day. Very ambiant and crowded. Nice for a drink and just enjoy!

Serbia’s capital and largest city, Belgrade is also the country’s prime tourist destination and offers a large selection of places to stay. The diverse array of hotels includes everything from chain hotels to boutique establishments and bed and breakfasts, running the gamut in terms of luxury and price. With some exceptions, most hotels cluster in the city center or just a short walk or commute away. Young visitors attracted to Belgrade’s nightlife book beds or rooms in the numerous hostels. Alternatively, consider renting a fully-furnished apartment.
