Crkva Svetog Marka, Belgrade
Categories: Architectural Buildings, Sacred & Religious Sites, Tourist Spots
Nestled in a park setting at the heart of the city, the classically styled Crkva Svetog Marka recalls the region's medieval churches. Its two-colored facade was built in 1940 using local and ancient Byzantine techniques. The 1,150 sq m (12,380 sq ft) interior spaces can host up to 2,000 worshipers and 150 singers, and its basement contains a large crypt containing remains of numerous important Serbian personalities. See the lavish marble iconostasis and altar table and observe the mosaic icons that decorate a large portion of the interior. Don't miss the 14th-century remains of Tsar Dušan, under whose rule Serbia flourished, or the elaborate beehive modeled after the church. You can take photos of this massive church from the picturesque park above it. Crkva Svetog Marka is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Belgrade Edition.
