Crkva Svetog Marka, Belgrade

4.5
#4 of 72 in Historic Sites in Serbia
Architectural Building Religious Site
Nestled in a park setting at the heart of the city, the classically styled Crkva Svetog Marka recalls the region's medieval churches. Its two-colored facade was built in 1940 using local and ancient Byzantine techniques. The 1,150 sq m (12,380 sq ft) interior spaces can host up to 2,000 worshipers and 150 singers, and its basement contains a large crypt containing remains of numerous important Serbian personalities. See the lavish marble iconostasis and altar table and observe the mosaic icons that decorate a large portion of the interior. Don't miss the 14th-century remains of Tsar Dušan, under whose rule Serbia flourished, or the elaborate beehive modeled after the church. You can take photos of this massive church from the picturesque park above it. Crkva Svetog Marka is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Belgrade Edition.

  • Impressive architecture, make sure you don't miss it. Nice view by night, also. It is located near a park where you can rest, so it is worth the effort.  more »

  • Another extremely beautiful church in Belgrade. It has a huge Balcony for the choir and it has an extremely high ceiling. It is designed in the Byzantyian style similar to the Saint Sava Cathedral but is narrower. The church service is very beautiful and the overall design is nice. I love this church and other churches for reasons that cannot really be described but it's a beautiful church. There is a huge park beside and many taxis in front of it usually. It is also near the government buildings like what I think is the House of Commons or something similar. I would not be describing the church except hoping others will know possibly to visit it.
  • The wonderful exterior is a copy of the Gracanica Monastery. It's better on the outside- the interior is brand new, bleak. It's literally half a minute away from the House of the National Assembly, don't miss it!
  • St. Mark's Church is located in the center of Belgrade in Tašmajdan Park. It is one of the largest churches in our country. It was built between the two world wars, from 1931-1940 and its interior is still not fully completed.
  • very dood chuch and has a really nice choir
  • Beautiful exterior, but I couldn't get inside today :(
