Pico de Sao Tome, Monteforte

#5 of 6 in Nature in Sao Tome and Principe
Mountain · Nature / Park
The country's highest basalt mountain, Pico de Sao Tome rises from the island's massive shield volcano. Although standing 2,024 m (6,640 ft) above sea level, the mountain is actually submerged another 1,000 m (3280 ft) and contains freshly formed rocks at the sea bed, some of which date back to 100,000 BCE. You can reach the summit on foot only, so pack up your hiking gear and consider hiring a guide to navigate the misty forests and grasslands. Along the way, you'll observe the thriving animal and plant life, including orchids, bamboo, tarantulas, and exotic birds.
