Torture Museum, City of San Marino

3.5
#1 of 10 in Museums in San Marino
Not for the faint of heart, Torture Museum showcases ancient instruments of torture. Your imagination may get the best of you as you tour this exhibition of devices from the 16th to the 19th centuries and learn how each was used. Some displays give you a look into past human cruelty with the intention of portraying how society has accepted--and been very much involved in--the torture of peers. • Sobering. To live well this one must always reflect on past mistakes. And this is a perfect environment in which to reflect on the historic highs of cruelty. Very interesting, very helpful and polite staff. Like all citizens of San Marino.

  • Small museum located next to the port of San Francesco, preserves many tools used for torture during the last centuries. Some of these are not visible in the other torture museums in Italy. All the tools needed to clear and precise descriptions, in different languages and therefore understandable to foreign tourists. Recommend a visit just for those who are not weak stomach or too sensitive.

  • The visit was very interesting and definitely does reflect on many subjects such as religion, sexism and human cruelty. Small flaw in product descriptions that occasionally fell into a sort of feminist zealotry.

  • Fascinating museum full of historical torture instruments, not replicas! The museum is very small, with a full look round reading all of the texts taking about how the items were used; these are in Italian, English, French & German. Great for tourists! Although the museum is small, the ticket price is also very low (more than reasonable) so it is well worth a visit for anyone visiting this micro country.
  • Small but decent museum. Often there is a short description of the implements that are on display of how these devices are used and their history. Very cool and cringeworthy if your imagination is good enough.
  • Nice museum. Everybody should visit it to understand the mistakes of the past. Small but worth visiting. Nice that all descriptions are in Italian, French, English and German. Great
  • A very nice museum that presents a brief history of torture. I suggest reading through all the labels on the instruments instead of simply passing by, the stories behind each of the items here are quite mesmerizing.
  • Chills run down your spine when seing the actual torture instruments conceived by humans to cause enmence pain or simply just killing the person (slowly). Worth a visit.
