Basilica del Santo Marino, City of San Marino

#4 of 9 in Historic Sites in San Marino
Explore the Neoclassical architecture of Basilica del Santo Marino, the main church within the city. Although this structure was built during the 1800s, the first church that occupied this spot was constructed during the 4th century. Enter the basilica to see the three large naves, green Neoclassical interior, numerous paintings, statues, and altars. Head back outside to see the Chiesa di San Pietro next to the front steps. This small building was built in 600 and reputedly houses the beds of San Marino and San Leo. Inside, look for a statue dedicated to St. Peter and a monument to Pope John XXII. • The Basilica di San Marino is a Catholic church dedicated to Saint Marinus, the founder and patron of San Marino. Unlike many Gothic and Renaissance style cathedrals in Italy, this Basilica has Neocla...  more »
  • The basilica stands out in the city's landscape. Nice entrance with very high columns. Beautiful Interior. (in April 2018)

  • In my opinion, this basilica is even a little too big for such a micro state... Well, but... A small country, it is even a large basilica. I've been in San Marino a few times, I've always passed beside this temple, but I've never been inside. Maybe I was a little discoured, because the first two attempts were unsuccessful-just closed.

  • Nice Catholic church dedicated to Saint Marinus, the founder and patron of the Republic. The present neoclassical church was built in 1836 in place of an earlier one that dated to 7th century. The front porch contains eight Corinthian columns. Relics of St. Marino are enshrined in the basilica under the altar.
  • San Marin is definitely worth visiting. This medieval fortress with a paranomic view from the countryside to the Adriatic kept me speechless. When I was there the funicular was closed but I got to enjoy a tasty gelato. I totally recommend this little Republic.
  • A beautiful churge and less crowded than the rest of the touristic sites.
  • Take the time to go in as you will not regret it. It is so bright and pure.
  • It was very beautiful. The only heavy thing, was to reach the upper point, it took so long, but it was worth it. Especially the view was nice. I enjoyed it a lot and I would go again if I'm nearby. Bella Italia
