To Sua Ocean Trench, Lotofaga

(4.7/5 based on 900+ reviews on the web)
Marvel at the splendor of To Sua Ocean Trench, a massive swimming hole filled with blue water and surrounded by lush vegetation. The swimming hole is set deep in the ground, so a ladder is required to enter and exit. The water fills the hole via an ancient lava tube connected to the ocean, which creates a current. Weak swimmers can take hold of a rope across the center of the hole. Bring something to cover up with when you're not swimming, as conservative dress is requested out of the water. A few picnic tables are available, so consider packing some refreshments. To Sua Ocean Trench is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Upolu Edition.

  • I though the price was a bit steep, but then it goes towards the village, so I didn't mind. Its really a cool place to see and something that is a must when you are in Samoa  more »

  • Absolutely amazing place. A MUST see if you are visiting Samoa. The walk up and down the trench is a little dicey, but its part of the fun! When you get in the water it is absolutely worth it!
  • Amazing place and great fun - if heights don't bother you, definitely climb down for a swim! Also great to have fales available for resting, should the climb be too much to handle
  • Location & spectacular feature but way too dangerous, needs a serious upgrade eg. Safety rail & steps before someone is hurt.
  • Beautiful place. Take your swim trunks, you'll want to dive in
  • This is one of the top pinned posts on Pintrest, so we had to stop. From Apia, it is about an hour and 15 mins to the Trench. It is relatively well marked from the road but it is a bit of a drive through the mountains. It may be worth renting a car for the day rather than taking a taxi (we were quoted 120 tala each way for a taxi and most car rental places are cheaper than that). The 20 tala entrance fee provides you access to the trench as well as manicured grounds, blowholes, and tidepools. Bring lunch and spend an afternoon swimming in the sinkhole and then eating in one of their fales overlooking the ocean. Highly recommend!
