Spassky (St Saviour) Monastery, Yaroslavl

4.4
#4 of 26 in Historic Sites in Yaroslavl
Visit Spassky (St Saviour) Monastery, home to the oldest building in the city--the monastery cathedral. Originally built in the 12th century, the monastery also served as a citadel. Look at the remains of a thick 16th-century fortification wall, mounted with watchtowers. Underground passageways once lead to the monastery dungeons and treasury within the walls. The monastery is part of a larger preserve, so you'll also have the chance to explore the museum collection, including the 12th-century manuscript, "The Tale of Igor's Campaign." Visited the Kremlin independently. Not began to take a single ticket sought belfry and the Cathedral. We were lucky with the weather, visibility was good, looked at the city from a "bird's-eye view". Went to the Cathedral. You can see immediately that it 500 years. Since last year, is protected by UNESCO. Very nice, if you have time, you can get around in detail and examine all the exposure, we, unfortunately, were in time restricted, we waited for other cities. But in General, everyone enjoyed it. It can be seen that gradually is restoration, much had already been done.

Today the monastery, founded in the 12nd century on the strategic direction of the city and served as a defensive outpost at the same time, it is the State historical-architectural reserve. It was here in the late 18 century Musin-Pushkiin discovered the manuscript of "the word about Igor's Regiment". Spaso-preobrazhenskiy Cathedral is built in the beginning of the 13rd century in honor of the Principality of Yaroslavl education. At the same time in a monastery created a large library, work is in progress on the correspondence of church books. In the 17 century, during the time of troubles, the monastery of Polish troops withstood the siege. From its walls militia Minin and Pozharsky moved to liberate Moscow. And Ivan the terrible and Mikhail Romanov, after of the entering on the throne, loved to visit here and like the monastery big land. On the territory of many buildings of different periods of time: the Church, the belfry, refectory, cells and so nice to take a walk, listen to interesting history guide, the battle of the bells from one of the venerable Bell Ringers ... To the left of the entrance I advise you look into the souvenir shop: authentic Russian crafts products assembled in one place. Here and dymkovskie toys and khokhloma and many contemporary artists-not oskudela Ruska talents ...

Visited the main Cathedral before closing. First impression-go restoration. not visible clearly Frescoes. Turns out everything after the restoration, left, as preserved. Wonder but didn't want to leave such a spirit of antiquity vital that all thought and effort went into distant history. Impressive. Toured the monastery courtyard, well cared for, there is a summer Café, liked the refectory building with high steps. There are benches, you can relax, think. Have a valid temple where services are held beside the belfry there are tent with souvenirs. on the territory is open to visitors with toilet, potted flowers and a large mirror. There are all conditions for a relaxing visit to this historic property. And he-nainteresnejshij, believe me!
