Vologda Kremlin, Vologda
(4.6/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web)
Climb the bell tower and explore three centuries of architecture in the archbishops' courtyard of Vologda Kremlin. Capture a panoramic view of the city from the chapel, and walk around the steward's house and the bishop's chambers, named after Archbishop Simon, under whom it was constructed in 1669. Wander through the Baroque Joseph block, constructed from 1764-1769. Even though the area has never been under attack, the surrounding high walls with their loopholes and covered transitions inside are reminiscent of a fortress, designed symbolically to indicate that the strong walls represent the ideological glorification of the church and the bishops. Wear comfortable shoes to walk around, and note that when you are climbing the bell tower, you can often feel it sway in the wind. • Rome was in transit and visiting the Kremlin was obligatory point program. To my regret, I was on the eve of the holiday and Museum staff agreed that the work day pre-holiday only up to 16, but so heavily, so the only place that we managed to see expelled at 15.30.

  • The new year's holidays. St. Sofia Cathedral was closed. Reminiscent of an eponymous Cathedral in Veliky Novgorod. Toured the Kremlin and the Bishop's courtyard with Gavriilovskim casing and Chambers Joseph Golden, Voskresensky Cathedral and Bell Tower. The Bell Tower was raised bitter cold and windy, and it should have been. Much restored, but still a lot. Visited the Museum of ancient art with a beautiful collection of icons. Next to the Kremlin is Alexander Nevsky temple square and Vologda Lace Museum in the building of the former State Bank, as well as the many souvenir shops.
