Vladivostok

4.1
Bridges · Landmarks · Monuments
Often compared to San Francisco and Naples, the sprawling eastern city of Vladivostok serves as the largest Russian port on the Pacific Ocean. Established in 1860 as a military post, the city grew into a major center of commerce and transportation. Closed to foreign travelers from 1958 to 1992, Vladivostok now draws big tourist crowds with its hilly streets, centenarian buildings, and busy bay area, named the "Golden Horn" after a similarly shaped harbor in Istanbul. Farther away from the water, the city turns into a mass of gray housing blocks, remnants of the glum Soviet days. Begin or end your trans-Siberian trip in this city, the eastern terminus of the world's longest passenger railway route. Use our world travel planner: Vladivostok and all its delights await.

Where to stay in Vladivostok

One of the most popular destinations of the Russian Far East, Vladivostok offers its visitors plenty of options for a place to stay. You'll find many centrally located hotels, as well as those in residential areas; and because of the city's bay location, sea-view rooms are not an uncommon feature. Several high-end hotels cater to well-heeled travelers, while those with more modest budgets will also find plenty of options, including smaller hotels, bed and breakfasts, and hostels. If you prefer self-catering accommodation, look for apartments in some of the most popular locations around the city.
