St. Sophia Cathedral, Veliky Novgorod

(4.8/5 based on 320 reviews on the web)
Visit the oldest stone church in Russia, St. Sophia Cathedral. St. Sophia is home to an ancient icon of the Madonna that reputedly saved the city from siege in 1169. Prince Vladimir, the son of Yaroslav the Wise, built the five-domed church in the 11th century in place of the existing wooden church. See the three famous sets of gates. Head to the west entrance to get a close look at the largest, which are bronze and embellished with biblical scenes. Notice the portraits of the artisans in the lower left corner and the Latin inscription of their names. Visit the stone bell tower, which still holds a number of ancient bells. • Well preserved fragment of a fresco 11 century. Inside lie the remains (relics) of religious and political figures 11-12 centuries. History deserve special attention of their life, it's such an incredible mix of history and fantasy:)
