St. Sophia Cathedral, Veliky Novgorod
(4.8/5 based on 300 reviews on the web)
Visit the oldest stone church in Russia, St. Sophia Cathedral. St. Sophia is home to an ancient icon of the Madonna that reputedly saved the city from siege in 1169. Prince Vladimir, the son of Yaroslav the Wise, built the five-domed church in the 11th century in place of the existing wooden church. See the three famous sets of gates. Head to the west entrance to get a close look at the largest, which are bronze and embellished with biblical scenes. Notice the portraits of the artisans in the lower left corner and the Latin inscription of their names. Visit the stone bell tower, which still holds a number of ancient bells. • Periodically live in Veliky Novgorod, often in the Kremlin and of course visit the Hagia Sophia, who has not yet visited this great place, I beg you not to wait and be sure to go there. The strong point, in all senses of the word. One of the most famous legends of Novgorod is associated with the shape of a dove sitting on the highest Central Cross of St. Sophia Cathedral. During the defeat of Novgorod in 1570 Ivan the terrible year, Dove legend sat down to relax and petrified of what he saw. If a stone bird fly away, it is the last day of the great Novgorod.

  • Is the oldest church in Russia to existing built in 1045. And it was made to model Sofia Cathedral in Kiev, so hear to the Kiev yearning. Window is small, so the Interior is Dim but rather reflects a solemn feeling. The famous bronze door has claimed during the war with Sweden in the 12th century is a thing. Incidentally, during World War II the cross on the dome of Hagia Sophia Spain took it, but had returned after the Soviet collapse is unlikely.

  • It turns out that my ancestors are buried here at the Cathedral and it was an amazing experience coming from such a far away place to here to witness my ancestors.
  • Старый и очень красивый собор
  • Nice.
  • Magnificent
  • Well preserved fragment of a fresco 11 century. Inside lie the remains (relics) of religious and political figures 11-12 centuries. History deserve special attention of their life, it's such an incredible mix of history and fantasy:)
