St. George Monastery, Veliky Novgorod

Admire the remnants of medieval frescoes and learn about Russian history at St. George Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in the country and the former center of religious and cultural life in an ancient town. The monastery was attacked during Soviet rule, and was closed in 1929 after five of the six churches on the grounds were destroyed the year before. During World War II, German armed forces occupied the buildlings, which were damaged yet again. Since its return to the Russian Orthodox Church in the 1990s, the property has been restored. The monastery is a source of important historical information on medieval Novgorod, given that the first references made to the main church on the property date back to the 12th century, when it served as the burial place of Novgorodian princes. Be sure to visit the various temples on the property, including the Church of Saint George, where the two sons of Yaroslav the Wise, Izyaslav of Luki and Rostislav, are buried. The monastery is easily accessible via public transportation. Dress warmly, as it is close to the lake and often gets chilly. • St. George's monastery was founded in the year 1030 by Yaroslav the wise. The main shrine of St George Cathedral, 12th century Abbot of the monastery, a number are buried there and Russian Princes. Among them, the eldest brother and mother of Alexander Nevsky. Inside the Cathedral impresses by its size. Unfortunately, the frescoes of the 12th century practically is not preserved, the main part of the XIX century the temple is not acting but is open to the public. Also noteworthy the magnificent temple in honor of the exaltation of the Holy Cross, located on the northeast corner of the monastery, which is the hallmark of the monastery. The Cathedral is built in the 19th century and stands out for its 5 heads of dark blue colour, which posted 208 vosmikonechnyh stars. Temple, but we could not get inside, was closed for technical reasons. The rest is not so interesting. But still it's nice to just walk on the territory of the monastery. Pay attention that the monastery is open from 10:00 to 18:00. The yuryev monastery is one of the places that you must visit.

  • It is believed that St. George's monastery was founded in the year 1030, was laid by Yaroslav the wise, who received at baptism the name of George, which was pronounced in Russian as "Yuri". That is why the so called monastery. For several centuries it was called Lavra and was considered in these places first in importance. In the 15-16 centuries it was the richest and largest monastery. One of the patron of the monastery was Countess Anna Orlova, Alexey Orlov-Chesmensky he daughter and niece of Gregory Orlov. She was a very religious woman and donated almost all his fortune to the needs of the monastery. She was buried here. One time on the territory of the monastery were buried and Orlov brothers, but one of their descendants decided to rebury them at a family estate in Stupinskom district of Moscow region. The revolution Manor burned. Where remains unknown. St. George's Cathedral-the most ancient structure of the monastery is a place of burial of the mother and the older brother of Alexander Nevsky. The modern look of the St George Cathedral is close enough to the original. An ancient mural painting almost completely lost, only small fragments.

  • According to the legend, founded in 1030 by Prince Yaroslav the wise. Yaroslav Vladimirovich in baptism was named George; in the Russian language most commonly took the form of "Yuri", hence the name of the monastery. The first recorded mention refers to the year 1119. The buildings of the monastery were originally made of wood, like its collegiate church of Saint George. In 1119 year by order of Prince Mstislav the great stone church was founded is St. George's Cathedral, was built by master Peter — the first Russian architect whose name is referred to as Annals.

  • Beautiful monastery on the banks of the river Volkhov. Area neat and tidy. One of the elders of the churches partially reconstructed (inside), but it works. There are paid toilet. There is a parking lot, but the number of people wishing to visit a monastery at the weekend more than the number of parking spaces. Often here bring bus tours.
