Millennium of Russia, Veliky Novgorod
(4.9/5 based on 440+ reviews on the web)
Take in the intricate details of what's widely considered the starting point of Russian history at Millennium of Russia, a bronze monument honoring the millenium of Rurik's arrival in Novgorod. A competition to design the monument was held in 1859, and the winning artist, Mikhail Mikeshin, designed a 15 m (49 ft) bell topped by a cross symbolizing the tsar's power. Numerous tiers of sculptures surround the bell, representing Russian monarchs, artists, generals, and other historic figures like Lomonosov, Gogol, and Brullov. Leading Russian sculptors, including Ivan Schroeder and Alexander Opekushinhe, created the 129 individual statues. Note the kneeling figure in the upper tier, symbolizing the country, and the lower tier with six groups representating different periods of the nation's history through the start of the 18th century. During World War II, the Nazis dismantled the monument and prepared to transport it to Germany, but never succeeded in doing so, and the monument was restored and unveiled again. • A unique place with a powerful energy. Especially impressed with the story about how the Germans tried to take out the monument, but failed.

  • Exceptional! To understand the time scale. Trying to find out those people that are depicted in the monument, you realize how little you know. If something happens-very good.
