Siberian Cats Park, Tyumen

(2.9/5 based on 180+ reviews on the web)
Dedicated to Tyumen's fearless felines, Siberian Cats Park commemorates one of the city's contributions to Russia during World War II. As the siege of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) starved the citizens of Russia's second city in the West, cats began to disappear as people captured and ate them just to stay alive. This caused an explosion in the rat population there, threatening food supplies and the priceless national treasures of the Hermitage Museum. Visit this memorial park and see the gold-plated cats representing those that were shipped from Tyumen to St. Petersburg to help hunt down rats and protect the nation's most precious artifacts from destruction. The site teaches that although the cats hardly had a say, the several hundred that made the journey played a huge role in Russia's postwar cultural recovery. Plan your visit to Siberian Cats Park and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Tyumen tour planner.

  • A curious spectacle. Love cats. It's nice that they have monuments. I would like to visit the city where there are such roundabouts and monuments cats.

  • While on a business trip in January 2017 onwards, we are partners heard one very interesting history about Tyumen cats. It turns out their dozens were caught in the post-war city of Tyumen to send further by train to museums of Leningrad to combat rodents, which literally destroyed the exhibits, taking advantage of the fact that all representatives of the feline residents ate during the siege. For this courageous Museum feat tjumenskim cats in the motherland monument was raised in one of the squares of the city. Very nice and informative history of absolutely clear explains this monument.

  • The square itself is not large, but overall a pleasant place is right in between the new and the old town.
