Zoological Museum, St. Petersburg

4.0
See skeletons of existing and extinct animals, from tiny living insects to a gargantuan blue whale skeleton and woolly mammoths at Zoological Museum. With tens of thousands of fishes, invertebrates, reptiles, birds, and mammals represented, the museum displays almost every form of animal life on earth. View artifacts in dioramas of taxidermied animals and browse a large collection of skeletons and bones that includes rare specimens, such as narwhal tusks. One of the highlights is the naturally mummified body of a baby mammoth. Most display placards show the names of the species in Russian and Latin, but it's not essential to understand either of these languages to appreciate the exhibit. • This unique Museum, ideal for exploring the wildlife with your child. Here a great number of both single stuffed animals and tracks. The only pity is that contained in a miserable State Museum and exhibits will soon collapse.

  • I very much enjoyed this museum here mainly some stuffed animals already dead animals. This museum is not running naphthalene in step with the times.

  • Definitely not a priority during a visit to the beautiful city of St. Petersburg, though if you have the time definitely deserves a look. The Museum is housed in a beautiful building with huge indoor halls and it is quite frequented by families. The museum displays a large collection of animals from the smallest to the largest collected during the many Russian expeditions of the past. Many animals are stuffed animals, some is exposed the skeleton, some Windows show the reconstruction of natural environments in which they live some of the species kept. The amount of material is impressive. The highlights of the museum include an adult mammoth is preserved part of guard hair and two baby mammoth in excellent condition. But more than the content, awesome for variety, the museum itself is the real attraction. It's the 19th century atmosphere that is breathed through the sight of the huge dusty storefronts, layout lacks a common thread objects, sparse nameplates written in an old Cyrillic and only partially transliterated, huge rooms with high ceilings. A fascinating Museum of the past.

Where to stay in St. Petersburg

For luxury hotels with a price tag to match, you can't beat the city's historical heart--Palace Square--and Nevsky Prospekt, the main avenue that connects the square to the Neva River. The area around St. Isaac's Cathedral, at the west end of Nevsky Prospekt, also offers a great selection of luxury and mid-range options. If you want to see the other side of the city, consider staying on Vasilyevsky Island, at the mouth of the river. Increased competition means that St. Petersburg now offers a wide range of inexpensive but funky hostels scattered throughout the city.
