Peter and Paul Fortress, St. Petersburg

The first structure ever built in Saint Petersburg, Peter and Paul Fortress serves as the final resting place of all Russian monarchs from Peter the Great to Alexander III. Constructed in 1703, the fortress takes up the better part of a small island in the river Neva. Designed to repel possible attacks by the Swedish navy, the massive structure never served its intended purpose, eventually becoming a notorious political prison. The most notable feature of this complex is its cathedral, boasting a gilded cupola and a bell tower that dominates the skyline from a height of over 120 m (400 ft). The fortress also houses a museum dedicated to the history of the city. • This is my most favorite place of my trip in Saint Petersburg. Came here to visit Anastasia but found that they have much more interesting. Behind this fortress there is a nice shore which can take a walk along the Neva River. I visited here 2 days just to chill out after a long day.
  • I would say this is the second best place in Saint Petersburg for its beauty, history and scenic view of the sea! The cathedral is breathtakingly beautiful and don't forget to visit the curtain wall and the jail in the fortress. You can buy a combined ticket for 700 rub at a building called boat house in front of cathedral.
  • Amazing place to visit in Saint Petersburg. A lot of things to see. When I visited this fort it was snowing and everything was covered with white snow and a different view could be perceived. A lot of people visit it along the year and to go there you have to cross the famous bridge above the Neva river. Awesome place!
  • Great historical place! You should definitely visit excursions with a full ticket! Very interesting programm, professional stuff. Full ticket is not expensive and valid for 2 days. The visit will take at least 2-3 hours.
  • I enjoyed the history of this location. Granted, it didn't have a ton of gravitas as I didn't know it existed or its use before actually arriving. The prison area was particularly cool. There were other pieces that you could purchase in the fortress to see special dungeons or torture chambers. I didn't go for that. I simply stuck with what was included with general admission and found myself pleased.
