Palace Square (Dvortsovaya Ploshchad), St. Petersburg
(4.8/5 based on 3,200+ reviews on the web)
Saint Petersburg's historical heart, monumental Palace Square (Dvortsovaya Ploshchad) provided the setting for some of the 20th century's most dramatic events. In 1905, imperial troops shot at unarmed strikers demonstrating in this very space, sparking the Revolution of 1905. In 1917, Bolshevik militants stormed the royal residence, the square's most prominent building, signaling the start of the October Revolution. Today, the grand square serves a more peaceful purpose, attracting visitors with its ensemble of landmark buildings. Commence your tour of the city at the square's central column, the tallest of its kind in the world. Erected in honor of Russia's victory over Napoleon's France, the top of the towering column features a statue of an angel holding a cross. • Takes your breath away when you walk in this area. Think how much has happened here! There is a possibility to change into Royal outfits and a ride in a carriage to the Palace Square. Superb sensation! If visited in a time machine and himself participated in long events of the past century.

  • We had huge expectations of this square, but upon arriving, we noticed it was so bare, it is just a couple of buildings with nothing alive around it, no flowers, no plants, very bare and unattractive....  more »

  • My favourite part is to go there at night; the lights on the buildings give such a lovely atmosphere!
  • I felt like I was stepping back in time to a different world - like a movie set. Breathtaking spot in St. Petersburg.
  • The heart of Saint-Peterburg. Big but cosy square. Love this place. Be sure to visit
  • Very nice view and just an amazing panorama. Unfortunately, the government chose this place for concerts and events which ruins the whole thing beauty and freedom of movement there.
  • Impressive and giant square in Saint Petersburg, although some of you commies still prefer to call it Leningrad. Whatever. Still pretty damn cool.
