Palace Bridge, St. Petersburg

(4.7/5 based on 1,100+ reviews on the web)
Walk across Palace Bridge, built after Emperor Nicholas I lifted Peter the Great's prohibition to construct bridges across the river. It was designed to provide an unobstructed view of the city. Composed of five cast iron spans, the 260 m (853 ft) bridge has a history dating back to a 1901 design competition. Deliberations lasted for eight years, after which the current design was chosen, although the bridge wasn't unveiled until 1916 because of the delays caused by the onset of World War I. The bridge is raised at night, making it difficult to get across the city, so be sure to be on the correct side of the river before it goes up. Watching the raising of the bridge can be quite a sight--stand on the shore or take a water tour to observe it from a closer distance. • I might not have seen it in action because the river was freezing in winter but I would imagine how cool it would be when the bridge works for the local vehicles and ships.
  • The Russians were capable of transforming an operation itself somewhat prosaic in one of the most amazing performances I've ever witnessed during my extensive travel experiences. Let's start from the beginning, in a damp night in early September 2016. My fears of crossing the city in an hour late were soon dispelled by the crowd poured out into the streets and in the clubs, which conveyed a sense of security and confidence; in the area of the bridge stood out in particular, a musical group of entertainment, food and drinks and paid public toilets; Meanwhile, about one o'clock, the mass of spectators has grown and many more. On the River, a large number of ships for the cruise at night on the Neva have started moving towards one fifteen, making a spectacle in its own right. The buildings on the banks were dressed up thanks to the wise and spectacular lighting that enhances them in hours of darkness. Then, at twenty-five, after the police had blocked access to the Deck of the building, the speakers began to spread solemn music and catchy, while-wonder-the bridge slowly began to open up! Photos, videos and comments admired at that point abounded. Then, after a while, like ghosts begin to move the ships leaving St. Petersburg aimed at every where; I recognize on the side of one of them the inscription of the company Volga-Don! As a cherry led to another, so it was also for ships, with people dancing to the music of big radio or Smartphones, toasting the long night Petrograd. That dire....la fatigue of late has been largely offset by an event of music, lights and colours that will always remain indelible in the minds of those fortunate enough to assist. At that time I could understand in full the comments fans of those who have preceded me to me recommending never miss your appointment. Recommendation which now in turn relay to those who want to plan a trip to that city. The next morning we crossed the bridge on foot to return to the scene of the night and to admire the broad view it offers.
