  • Ostrovskogo square now represents Katkin Sadiq, facing the monument to Katerina II against the backdrop of the building of alexandrinsky Theatre, at least in summer. View beautiful anyway, but the entire ensemble of the square no. Writer s. Lourie mentioned it first closed vegetation, calling it "completely dead". But there is a garden where, if you're lucky, you can relax on a bench. To present the ensemble looked like in the past, it is necessary to approach each side closer to consider structures without trees, and then enable the imagination. The ensemble is interesting because all the buildings of the square was designed by the same architect, Rossi, if you don't count the buildings adjacent to the library and sinking in the depths of space. The main building, forming the shape of a square, became the alexandrinsky Theatre, named after the wife of Nicholas i. Gorgeous, amazingly proportional building, leaving an impression of lightness despite its massiveness, thanks to the white columns of the Loggia, zavershiju smaller, elongated niches in lateral smooth parts of the main façade and zavershii and rising on hind legs kvadrige horses on an attic. Here is an interesting fact that already adorned with columns in the main growing Loggia façade, not a characteristic architectural element to Petersburg, we had in those days often built advanced portico with columns, as, for example, in the Tauride or Smolny palaces and side facades have been solved as the theater. This Loggia, only semicircular, is still in the Senate and Synod building, built the same Rossi. For the Theatre from it as would be drawn out.
