Nicholas Naval Cathedral of The Epiphany, St. Petersburg

Architectural Building Religious Site
With its gold-domed roofs and gilded interior, it's hard to say whether Nicholas Naval Cathedral of The Epiphany is more ornate inside or out. The Baroque Russian Orthodox cathedral has always been intimately associated with the Russian Navy, as evidenced by the upper church's memorial plaques for crews of sunken Soviet marines. Built on the bank of the Kryukov Canal from 1753 to 1762, the massive cathedral can accommodate up to 5,000 people. Consider attending a mass to see it in all its glory. You can appreciate the cathedral's exterior from a boat cruise along the canal, or from the viewpoint of the bell tower. • I stayed here for 30 minutes, attending a service. As a tourist I could not go past the rope, but that's OK. Ladies, DO wear a head scarf if you go. this is an active church and it's insulting to see ...  more »
  • Not as fancy as other cathedrals here but if you arrive at the right time (11am I believe) you will witness the service and the beautiful choirs, unforgettable!  more »
  • Not quite as imposing as some of the others, but this was a working church, not a museum. The separate bell tower is famous and unusual.  more »

  • One of the most beautiful churches in St Petersburg. Even nicer after snow.
  • During a sunny day it is a very nice structure to take picture of. The outside is better than the inside. If you are touring around, it's a nice spot.
  • One of the many ornate churches in town.
  • One of the most well preserved and most beautiful churches in the city. On weekends the second floor is open. Must see!
  • Late in the evening our ride, in the foreground, gave us the opportunity to photograph this beautiful Cathedral.
