Kronstadt, St. Petersburg
(4.6/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Explore the base of the Russian admiralty on your visit to Kronstadt, the city's primary seaport and once the site of a major rebellion. In March of 1921, the soldiers, navy officers, and sailors--along with their civilian supporters--led a rebellion against the local Bolshevik government, demanding freedom of speech and the end of deportation camps. Founded by Peter the Great, the military town was an important training center for the Soviet Navy during World War II, and features many fortresses that protected St. Petersburg and its vital shipping routes, although it was bombed several times by German forces during World War II. This municipality was of such importance to the Russian military that it was closed to the public until 1996. Visit the cathedral and palace, take a boat tour around the harbor fortresses, and visit the museum detailing the history of the area. The town is easily accessible via boat or the local bus service. Plan your visit to Kronstadt and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our St. Petersburg family vacation planner.

  • Kronstadt, Russia's naval base where the Cruiser Aurora (go and have a look from outside if the lines are too long) was restored recently, is an interesting trip away (30 km's) from St. Petersburg. I ...  more »
  • The city is the fortress of kronstadt. It is located on the island of Kotlin Island. Bathes the city on one side of the Gulf, and on the other side of the water of the Neva Bay. Here can be reached by public transport, this district of Peter. Interesting history, many historical and memorable places. From Kronstadt can take boat trips with a visit to the forts. There is something to see in the city. The truth is, back in the side, you can see abandoned houses and businesses. With the departure of military units here have stopped time dispersed working people to work. Built very large naval Cathedral in the name of Nicholas Svtitelja. Beautiful. Inside uncomfortable. Why so big? And inside a museum or church.

  • In addition to historical monuments and sights in kronstadt present special atmosphere, I would call it the spirit of a big utility or the atmosphere like on a big ship. All around her, all one team, with a few exceptions. Be sure to arrive, either walk, go to the naval Cathedral.
