Kronstadt, St. Petersburg
(4.6/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Explore the base of the Russian admiralty on your visit to Kronstadt, the city's primary seaport and once the site of a major rebellion. In March of 1921, the soldiers, navy officers, and sailors--along with their civilian supporters--led a rebellion against the local Bolshevik government, demanding freedom of speech and the end of deportation camps. Founded by Peter the Great, the military town was an important training center for the Soviet Navy during World War II, and features many fortresses that protected St. Petersburg and its vital shipping routes, although it was bombed several times by German forces during World War II. This municipality was of such importance to the Russian military that it was closed to the public until 1996. Visit the cathedral and palace, take a boat tour around the harbor fortresses, and visit the museum detailing the history of the area. The town is easily accessible via boat or the local bus service. Plan your visit to Kronstadt and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our St. Petersburg family vacation planner.

  • City fortress Construction (now Kronstadt) is the most unusual of all the cities nearby suburbs of Saint Petersburg. Located on the island, now attached by a dam, the city fortress, city port, city-naval base. It depends very much on the history of Russia, here in Hut Forte (Fort Alexander) and did a serum from the plague, Popov invented radio, built the first icebreaker and preserved elements of the industrial architecture of the 18-19 centuries. This is a great place, no crowds, the tranquil atmosphere of a small provincial town. And at the same time you're practically in Petersburg, quay, channels, bridges. Huge and majestic Marine Cathedral, is in itself deserving of a separate visit, as well as numerous forts, unfortunately, are in extremely poor condition.
