Explore the base of the Russian admiralty on your visit to Kronstadt, the city's primary seaport and once the site of a major rebellion. In March of 1921, the soldiers, navy officers, and sailors--along with their civilian supporters--led a rebellion against the local Bolshevik government, demanding freedom of speech and the end of deportation camps. Founded by Peter the Great, the military town was an important training center for the Soviet Navy during World War II, and features many fortresses that protected St. Petersburg and its vital shipping routes, although it was bombed several times by German forces during World War II. This municipality was of such importance to the Russian military that it was closed to the public until 1996. Visit the cathedral and palace, take a boat tour around the harbor fortresses, and visit the museum detailing the history of the area. The town is easily accessible via boat or the local bus service. Plan your visit to Kronstadt and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our St. Petersburg family vacation planner.

  • We arrived not quite a good day in the city of kronstadt, there were conducted some exercises and piers were closed. We looked at Bay, walked around the Park and decided to already leave disappointed, but saw an interesting Blees and went the wrong way and our eyes appeared the naval Cathedral in all its grandeur. It is possible to pass on the suspension bridge, and can be reached by car on an interesting road-paved. Our day was saved!
