Kronstadt, St. Petersburg

(4.7/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web)
Explore the base of the Russian admiralty on your visit to Kronstadt, the city's primary seaport and once the site of a major rebellion. In March of 1921, the soldiers, navy officers, and sailors--along with their civilian supporters--led a rebellion against the local Bolshevik government, demanding freedom of speech and the end of deportation camps. Founded by Peter the Great, the military town was an important training center for the Soviet Navy during World War II, and features many fortresses that protected St. Petersburg and its vital shipping routes, although it was bombed several times by German forces during World War II. This municipality was of such importance to the Russian military that it was closed to the public until 1996. Visit the cathedral and palace, take a boat tour around the harbor fortresses, and visit the museum detailing the history of the area. The town is easily accessible via boat or the local bus service. Plan your visit to Kronstadt and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our St. Petersburg family vacation planner.

  • The city recently became available for visits-before that it was closed to tourists. And now on the island are still military-marine facilities and a shipyard for the repair of ships. I visited it with turgruppoj, but as anticipated-time for a detailed examination of the US. Learn that to Kronstadt easily accessible by subway and minibus-so the next arrival in St. Petersburg I'll do! Kronstadt is well worth the effort and time to learn about its history and exploits.
