Kazan Cathedral, St. Petersburg

4.7
Modeled after one of the Vatican's major landmarks, Kazan Cathedral houses a world-famous icon of Our Lady of Kazan, one of the most significant religious images of Orthodox Christianity. Built in the early years of the 19th century, the classically designed building boasts a massive dome, dominating this part of the city from a height of some 80 m (260 ft). The lavishly decorated cathedral features numerous columns, sculptures, and icons, created by some of the biggest names in Russian art. Famed sculptor Boris Orlovsky designed the bronze statues of the Napoleonic War heroes Barclay de Tolly and Mikhail Kutuzov, whose remains lie interred inside the cathedral. • I was having a stroll nearby the canal, Singer Building and Church of Spilled Blood. Worth the visit when you are around the area.  more »
  • One of the most beautiful Cathedral in St. Petersburg and indeed in the world perhaps. Inside spend interesting tours and they go every 30 minutes. One bad thing-parking. In the heart of long ago it's time to introduce a fee for parking.

  • This famous Nevsky prospect in Saint Petersburg, on this "truncated the Vatican basilica imitation. And it's true that she looks a little, this Orthodox Cathedral of our Lady of Kazan (photo 1). Not colourful at all, is gray, the rigor of classical lines contrasts with the other churches of St. Petersburg. This is normal, because it was built from 1801 to 1811 by architect Andreï Voronikhine, on the order of Emperor Paul Ier. Before entering the colonnade, we must look at the various statues of generals Russians, winners of the war against Napoleon in 1812 (photo 2). Similarly, small businesses are visible around the building: some sellers sell their food creations (photos 3 and 4) during that "actors" pose with tourists to remind the splendors of the past (photos 5 and 6). Look at these two semicircular colonnades, with these beautiful Corinthian style columns with their acanthus leaves (pictures 7 and 8). They are high and watch them dizzy (photo 9). They support a classic pediment too, beautifully decorated (photo 10). Inside, dark enough, is adorned with 56 Corinthian style in pink granite columns and the floor is covered with a mosaic in marble of Karelia (photo 11). It is dedicated to our Lady of Kazan icon that is located on the Central iconostasis of the central nave of the Cathedral. It's easy to spot it, because before her, the pilgrims waiting in line to greet her closely.

  • Great place. One of the fine monuments in St Pete. Lots of people here, all males must remove their caps or head cover when entering; seems like a cultural thing here, am not sure but my Russian friend asked that I do that.
  • Another good place for everyone to go and check. You can see the culture of the Russian people on this wonderful cathedral. You have to visit it if you are in Petersburg
  • Wonderful cathedral by famous Russian architect Voronikhin. Named by most powerful and loved Our Lady of Kazan protecting Russia. Impressive place, especially with burials of greatest Russian officer Mikhail Kutuzov.
  • The Kazan cathedral is the one of the biggest and beautiful church in Russia Very beautiful design out and inside Really this place can take your heart and your mind You will like the place and enjoy your visit even you are not Christian Also try to wear long clothes as respect for the cathedral
  • Beautiful cathedral. The entry is free. It is important like in any religious places be attentive with the rules and be respectful.

Where to stay in St. Petersburg

For luxury hotels with a price tag to match, you can't beat the city's historical heart--Palace Square--and Nevsky Prospekt, the main avenue that connects the square to the Neva River. The area around St. Isaac's Cathedral, at the west end of Nevsky Prospekt, also offers a great selection of luxury and mid-range options. If you want to see the other side of the city, consider staying on Vasilyevsky Island, at the mouth of the river. Increased competition means that St. Petersburg now offers a wide range of inexpensive but funky hostels scattered throughout the city.
