Kazan Cathedral, St. Petersburg

Modeled after one of the Vatican's major landmarks, Kazan Cathedral houses a world-famous icon of Our Lady of Kazan, one of the most significant religious images of Orthodox Christianity. Built in the early years of the 19th century, the classically designed building boasts a massive dome, dominating this part of the city from a height of some 80 m (260 ft). The lavishly decorated cathedral features numerous columns, sculptures, and icons, created by some of the biggest names in Russian art. Famed sculptor Boris Orlovsky designed the bronze statues of the Napoleonic War heroes Barclay de Tolly and Mikhail Kutuzov, whose remains lie interred inside the cathedral. • Another beautiful church in St. Petersburg with distinct architecture. It's a practicing church. I could feel the power of reverence inside. You do not need to believe in a faith to feel the power of reverence and positivity. The inside of the church was glowing in the light of thousands of candles and people praying. A memorable visit for me.
  • Beautiful building, located in the very heart of the city. Very impressive architecture that doesn’t look like an Orthodox Church from the outside. The inside interior is reach and in Russian traditional style. This church holds one of the most famous and important icons in Russia - ‘Our lady of Kazan’. The entrance to the church is free. There is also a grave of the most famous Field Marshal of the Russian empire- Mikhail Kutuzov.
  • Beautiful.. still a practising church.. the sound of the singing echoing in the Domes was just beautiful. It's a stunning piece of architecture.
  • One of the most beautiful cathedrals in Saint Petersburg. It may seem a bit too dark from the inside, and the crowds are tough sometimes (both inside and on the small square outside).
  • Beautiful architecture, beautiful surroundings. I would love visit again this place.
