Kazan Cathedral, St. Petersburg

(4.7/5 based on 2,800+ reviews on the web)
Modeled after one of the Vatican's major landmarks, Kazan Cathedral houses a world-famous icon of Our Lady of Kazan, one of the most significant religious images of Orthodox Christianity. Built in the early years of the 19th century, the classically designed building boasts a massive dome, dominating this part of the city from a height of some 80 m (260 ft). The lavishly decorated cathedral features numerous columns, sculptures, and icons, created by some of the biggest names in Russian art. Famed sculptor Boris Orlovsky designed the bronze statues of the Napoleonic War heroes Barclay de Tolly and Mikhail Kutuzov, whose remains lie interred inside the cathedral. Put Kazan Cathedral into our St. Petersburg holiday planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Very beautiful architecture! Inside the light temple, who pulls a visit. It is both an attraction and a shrine, in which believers can go to pray. Many old, rare icons-most of them a real work of art! Even if you are indifferent to religion or worship another religion, still recommend a visit to Kazan Cathedral.

  • The first desire when visiting the Cathedral was the desire to escape from there as quickly as possible. Oppressive atmosphere, painful, I would say. Got there accidentally in the baptism of 19 January.

  • Another Saint Petersburg Cathedral, decorated with Italian panache. It is here that the hero of the film "Adventure ital'yancev v Rossii" broke one of the colon that stand in a semicircle and form the majestic Colonnade. Going inside, fall into the arms of another miracle architectural and scenic art. Among the local domain is allocated icon of Kazan Mother of God. No need to look for it, you'll understand immediately where she, drawing attention to a queue of people. Another attraction is the grave of Kutuzov. Yes, here was buried the great Russian commander of the Napoleonic era soldier. On the wall on either side of his grave still hang keys from French chateaux, taken by Russian troops during the time of the Patriotic War of 1812 onwards.
