Kazan Cathedral, St. Petersburg

#7 of 203 in Museums in St. Petersburg
History Museum Museum
Modeled after one of the Vatican's major landmarks, Kazan Cathedral houses a world-famous icon of Our Lady of Kazan, one of the most significant religious images of Orthodox Christianity. Built in the early years of the 19th century, the classically designed building boasts a massive dome, dominating this part of the city from a height of some 80 m (260 ft). The lavishly decorated cathedral features numerous columns, sculptures, and icons, created by some of the biggest names in Russian art. Famed sculptor Boris Orlovsky designed the bronze statues of the Napoleonic War heroes Barclay de Tolly and Mikhail Kutuzov, whose remains lie interred inside the cathedral. • A beautiful working Russian Orthodox Church. Remember to bring your scarf to cover head and it's free to enter! Beautiful like all their other cathedrals, it's of the dark and gloomy genre, no pews. W...  more »
  • This cathedral has a totally different architecture design compared to St Issac's. The "wings" spread out to the Nevsky Prospekt. Not much to see inside.  more »
  • This is what you might expect of a Russian orthodox church. Went during a service and absorbed the spirituality.  more »

  • Kazan is an active church and therefore you may enter free of charge. It is, however, not always open, but when it is you can often witness a church service or even sometimes a wedding taking place inside. The interior, like most Orthodox churches, is just beautiful. You should ask the local priest's blessing before taking photos inside this active church
  • Very different to the other cathedrals, worth a look if you have time. Quick entry and free.
  • It's amazing and exposing structure in the heart of the city. Although it Resembles a lot of other buildings throughout Western Europe, being in this city and location, gives it a much different meaning/ experience.
  • Simply stunning! Inspired by St Peter's Basilica in Vatican, this is a very unusual Russian church, inside and out.
  • Located on the Nevsky Prospect, a long, straight, wide main shopping street and tourist area. Kazan Cathedral is a smallish cathedral with a very imposing entrance, being a large walled gate. In my opinion, the wall and entrance is more spectacular and imposing than the cathedral itself.
