House of Books, St. Petersburg

4.6
Explore the collection of books, stationery, and souvenirs in an elegant Art Nouveau building at House of Books. Designed by architect Pavel Suzor for the Singer Sewing Machine Company, this standout on Nevsky Prospekt features a glass tower topped by a glass globe sculpture, bronze sculptures, an elaborate door sign, and a marble staircase and Venetian decor on the inside. The building itself is as much of an attraction as the more than 150,000 books housed in the bookstore. Most books sold are in Russian, many by local authors, but the store also has an extensive English-language selection, where you can see which authors are being featured and pick up books about the history and attractions within the area. Visit the art department for drawing supplies, watch a play, or pop into one of the lectures or master classes offered for children and adults while you're browsing around. Be sure to take in the panoramic views of the area through the large windows in the store. Head to the first floor for the on-site cafe and restroom facilities. • Intelligent city. A delightful old building. Mental sellers and cashiers. Bookstore with big letters, able to bring to the sweet faint any fan of the written word and the pristine pages of notebooks and albums. But, dear, why sculpt price tags on each notebook, each card and even envelope? Surely you haven't seen what develops thing broken sticky price tag? Bought friend envelope and card-would you not sent with a price tag, right? Otkleila it. To erase with dense postcards ugly stain, tried to use an alcohol wipe-it became even worse. The envelope remained sticky. The same with the magic with reproductions of Aivazovsky. It is so ...

  • The bookstore is in a beautiful old building. If you want to buy a Russian book, there are a variety of options. But if you walk the beauty of the bookstore, I'm sure you're disappointed. But if you l...  more »
  • Book House at Nevsky 28 (former Office of Singer) can be considered as one of the sights of St. Petersburg. At the beginning of the 20 century, this magnificent building was built in the art nouveau style for a company producing Singer sewing machines. Today bookshop and Café (and offices). A wonderful Bookstore, perhaps the largest in St. Petersburg. It's nice to wander around the store and look at the shelves of books and postcards, souvenirs, and calendars. Great ideas for gifts to family and friends after returning from St. Petersburg. In addition, there is a cosy café with a magnificent view of the Kazan Cathedral (the best view in town!) and a good kitchen. We usually eat breakfast here, arriving in St Petersburg. And one more. For me this building-the memory of the editorial was there Marshak and was "crushed" in the 30-IES (many authors, translators, editors, working under the direction of c. j. Marshak has been arrested). These people gave us and our children a great number of tales, poems, stories, who read our kids today. How they managed to do it then, in the years of repression and fear, the total is unclear. Kowtow to these remarkable people and true professionals! Today on Nevsky 28 sold those Books which were first published for children, edited by Marshak. Be sure to stop by this store when you're in St. Petersburg!

  • I like this place because it is very versatile. It is really a big mansion of books on almost all categories. Apart from that one can buy stationary items, gifts, cards, souvenirs, crafts, eatables - all making it a buy at one kind of place. It has a welcoming environment. It's decorated beautifully and one can also get free gift cards/coupons from "House of books" to do shopping later.
  • The old Singer sewing machine building is amazing place to grab a postcard or a book. On the second floor there is a great coffee shop where you can sit right next to a picture window a sip your coffee while watching look over an amazing view of the Kazan Cathedral.
  • If you need book, i mean any book, this is the right place to search, it has not only russian books, but english, german french, italian...
  • cities one of the oldest landmarks. earlier they had a coffee shop on 2nd floor. sadly now its just a book shop.
  • Excellent coffe at 2nd llevel and historic building.
