Gatchina Palace and Park, St. Petersburg

(4.6/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web)
Explore the historic imperial residence of past tsars at Gatchina Palace and Park. One hour's drive away from St. Petersburg, the palace sits atop the hills above Lake Serebryannoe, combining themes reminiscent of both a country residence and a medieval castle. Although originally built in 1766 for Count Orlov, Catherine the Great fell in love with the property and upon his death purchased and gifted the palace to her son, the future Emperor Paul I. Explore hundreds of rooms and numerous collections, including furniture, porcelain, antique weapons, sculptures, paintings, tapestries, and textiles. Information about the displays is written in English. Be sure to check out the secret underground tunnel and hear its famous echo before exiting. Afterwards, take a stroll through the large park and around the several lakes. Make Gatchina Palace and Park a centerpiece of your St. Petersburg vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our St. Petersburg vacation planner.

  • Suburb, Palace, Park, rich interiors, paintings and atmosphere, 19 18 centuries, the heyday of the Russian Empire. This description can characterize and Pushkin and Pavlovsk and Peterhof. but for what it's worth to go in Gatchina? Carved mahogany chairs, mouldings on the ceiling, silk and tapestry on the walls. Nowadays it's called-typical solution store IKEA. But this model is built in a completely filling an atypical architecture. Best in Gatchina to go at least a little knowing the history (even in the summary). And go independently, minibuses leave from the large square underground station Moskovskaya. It is worth to take a picnic basket, because after a tour of the Palace you can relax in the canopy of trees, a huge park on the shore of the Lake. And after the respite will depart to explore the Priory (Hi Paul ordenuot Malta 1). And I will try to briefly write what is the uniqueness of Gatchina. Changes the hue of the color of the walls of stones, which over time become only stronger; the current underpass with ECHO-speaking; Greek corridor; Home Theater in a former military wing; Platz instead of flower beds; the unrestored interiors retain the imprint of German soldiers, House Church in the Palace with blue mosaics many angels. But I love watching curls parquet on which shurshali the best silk look in mirrors in search of a passage through the looking glass, seek out secret passages, walls have heard not one plan of intrigues and conspiracies ....
