Gatchina Palace and Park, St. Petersburg

(4.6/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Explore the historic imperial residence of past tsars at Gatchina Palace and Park. One hour's drive away from St. Petersburg, the palace sits atop the hills above Lake Serebryannoe, combining themes reminiscent of both a country residence and a medieval castle. Although originally built in 1766 for Count Orlov, Catherine the Great fell in love with the property and upon his death purchased and gifted the palace to her son, the future Emperor Paul I. Explore hundreds of rooms and numerous collections, including furniture, porcelain, antique weapons, sculptures, paintings, tapestries, and textiles. Information about the displays is written in English. Be sure to check out the secret underground tunnel and hear its famous echo before exiting. Afterwards, take a stroll through the large park and around the several lakes. Make Gatchina Palace and Park a centerpiece of your St. Petersburg vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our St. Petersburg vacation planner.

  • Among the variety of attractions in St. Petersburg the most favorite place of our family is Gatchina! Here we return periodically, though not as in the Kazan Cathedral in every visit to St. Petersburg. Here quietly and peacefully, measured and nepompezno. The Palace did not shine in gold. The Park seems to be melted into the very nature of these places. But what a freedom and peace of mind?! Halls, guns, "the Observatory", the present underpass, Garden, Park, bridge! And yet, the most beautiful views of the Palace from the train station! When you see the whole Palace, as if on your hand! And it was from King station in the coach was heading once to the Palace. And yet not one in gatchina Palace. Their two! Be sure to take a walk through the park before the second Palace, it bears no resemblance to "my big brother". We, however, it has not yet been. So be sure to return again in Gatchina, what you wish!

  • Absolutely calm nepafosnoe place. Few tourists. The Park is magnificent. I want to walk and walk. The Palace is very interesting and really probably fully corresponds to the Emperor Paul. Very hurt during the great patriotic war, now thank God almost restored.

  • For the autumn holidays within the program museums-children did visit this lovely suburb of St. Petersburg. Advance booked a place in the sightseeing program, and at the appointed time the guide was already waiting for us on the first floor of the Palace. The number of participants in the Group was small, it was a big plus, everything was fine is heard and seen. The guide thanks, teacher with big letters! Mastering attention to children from the first minute, she held their "eagle eye" before the end of the tour. Be sure to visit this wonderful Museum. Wonderful park, the family-run and friendly, were here at different times of the year, and each time he is interesting in its own way.
