Gatchina Palace, St. Petersburg

4.8
#7 of 56 in Parks in St. Petersburg
Explore the historic imperial residence of past tsars at Gatchina Palace. One hour's drive away from St. Petersburg, the palace sits atop the hills above Lake Serebryannoe, combining themes reminiscent of both a country residence and a medieval castle. Although originally built in 1766 for Count Orlov, Catherine the Great fell in love with the property and upon his death purchased and gifted the palace to her son, the future Emperor Paul I. Explore hundreds of rooms and numerous collections, including furniture, porcelain, antique weapons, sculptures, paintings, tapestries, and textiles. Information about the displays is written in English. Be sure to check out the secret underground tunnel and hear its famous echo before exiting. Afterwards, take a stroll through the large park and around the several lakes. A visit to Gatchina Palace represents just the start of the adventure when you use our St. Petersburg holiday maker app to plot your vacation.

The gatchina Palace was restored not long ago. The Palace is huge. It was completely destroyed and looted during the war. Museum staff rescued and hidden sculptures, furniture and paintings. Something went in the evacuation. Now many things came back and took their seats. The floors of the halls were restored and restored according to original designs. Gorgeous work. Apartments Alexander III gathered an excellent exposition on the life of the imperial family. Museum staff are very kind, many know and tell. You can get there with the Baltic station to Gatchina Baltic. From the station-10 minute walk. Little people. The Palace is not yet included in the mandatory package for foreign tourists. But I am afraid that this is a matter of time, and in the coming years there will be no lights out from Chineses. So hurry! And you don't need to splurge on a bus tour from the Gostiny Dvor. Drive yourself. And walk through the park for sure.

Gatchina Palace made a great impression on us, exquisite interiors, stylish, no such bombastic decoration as in other palaces of the Russian emperors, but that he only WINS! Very interesting and informative tour!

The Palace is unusual. Piece of Florence near St. Petersburg. A nice Park (admission free) with a large lake, there are boat station. There are not so many tourists, the Chinese have not seen at all. If there is free time.

If you are interested in Russian history, namely Paul first, if you have already visited in Peterhof, Tsarskoye Selo and Pavlovsk even welcome to Gatchina, the dominant feature of which is the gatchina Palace the Palace resembled a medieval castle. in addition to the interiors, restored in the 18th and 19th c. you can go down to the basement of the building and go through the underpass go. Probably, this is the only place from St. Petersburg palaces, where it can be done. The Palace has left pleasant impression. The only thing that surprised me was this parquet. Not all the interiors they are covered with a protective layer, tourists do not wear shoe covers. As a result, the floors are dirty, the impression is not that. I hope that in the near future will correct the situation.
