Church Tourist Spot
Learn about buddhist philosophy, visit an astrologist, and explore the grounds of Buddhist Temple Datsan Gunzechoinei. Built in 1915, the temple and cultural center were constructed by Agvan Dorjiev with the permission of Tsar Nicholas II, despite opposition from the Russian Orthodox Church. In 1919, the Red Army vandalized the temple; although public worship resumed shortly thereafter, opposition to the Buddhists remained. Enter the temple and meet with one of the buddhists who maintain the site and cultural center, discuss their philosophies, and learn about their interpretation of the stars from a buddhist astrologist. View the memorial plaque on the grounds marking the events of 1938, when the monks on the property were gathered and killed as part of the purges initiated by the Stalinist regime. Walk through the surrounding gardens and sample authentic Uzbek cuisine at the popular on-site cafe. The temple is easily accessible via public transportation, but be sure to check opening hours before you visit.
